The Year's Work at the Zombie Research Center (The Year's Work: Studies in Fan Culture and Cultural Theory)From Indiana University Press

They have stalked the horizons of our culture, wreaked havoc on moribund concepts of dead and not dead, threatened our sense of identity, and endangered our personal safety. Now zombies have emerged from the lurking shadows of society’s fringes to wander the sacred halls of the academy, feasting on tender minds and hurling rot across our intellectual landscape. It is time to unite in common cause, to shore up defenses, firm up critical and analytical resources, and fortify crumbling lines of inquiry. Responding to this call, Brain Workers from the Zombie Research Center poke and prod the rotting corpus of zombie culture trying to make sense of cult classics and the unstoppable growth of new and even more disturbing work. They exhume "zombie theory" and decaying historical documents from America, Europe, and the Caribbean in order to unearth the zombie world and arm readers with the brain tools necessary for everyday survival. Readers will see that zombie culture today "lives" in shapes as mutable as a zombie horde―and is often just as violent.

Review

"Variously playful and (un)deadly serious..." ―Times Literary Supplement

"An intelligent and highly engaging collection that will appeal to legions of zombie fans, to students in the humanities, and to scholars working in fields that have already been affected by or are now preparing for the zombie apocalypse. It blends entertaining, illuminating, and accessible readings of zombies and zombie culture with unique interventions made from authoritative positions of expertise." ―Julian Murphet, author of Multimedia Modernism: Literature and the Anglo-American Avant-Garde

"There are so many great things to discuss about this awesome science fiction/horror genre, and the The Year's Work team of Commentate and Jaffe tackle it admirably. There are a number of home runs in this collection." ―boing boing

The Answer to Infection is Here
By CMT
Why should you buy this book? B R A I N S ! And plenty of it for your enjoyment!

Witty and punny, this delicious book is teeming with smart essays on the interminable and ubiquitous cultural phenomenon of zombies.

What accounts for the never-ending interest in/popularity of zombies? In the intro, Commentale and Jaffe provide lots of interesting reasons (because there are lots of different kinds of zombie). First, there’s our psychological fixation on the way the familiar and securely-seated past has the potential to rise up and become deeply weird. Or on how the stuff we we’ve always loved and desired is actually gross and disgusting. Beyond the personal/psychological, we also seemed to be much more freaked out these days about the larger hazards and risks that we thought were over-and-done-with, such as the soul-destroying operations of global capitalism or the long-term dangers of pollution. Moreover, we now live in a world in which, as the editors say, “nothing seems to die anymore.” We spend hours in “the massive digital crypt,” exposed to the strange temporality of our electronic world and its terrifyingly infinite archival power. And finally, we’re living in a nightmarish condition that Mad Men tries to sketch out in lighter colors -- the endlessly regenerative nature of commodity culture, its mind-numbing sequels, and next-best-things. This condition has an etymology that includes of course the history of Haiti, the dehumanization of slavery, and the ruined humanity in the wake of imperial conquest.

In addition to being an expression of disapproval and critique (we are dead in the midst of life), zombies also seem to be attempts to imagine how to live in the midst of these widespread conditions. Punk appropriations of futureless anarchy, as this book points out, are ways of inhabiting the waste land. Even more punk is the fact that the zombie can do more than point to some well-known meaning or allegory (we’re all mindless consumers; AIDS is gonna get you; your most cherished self is actually a hilariously monstrous and mostly mechanical body); the zombie is the figure who kills the very fantasy of permanent and necessary meanings. And that is so scary that we MUST try to kill the zombie first! Last one to kill is a rotten egg!

I haven’t come close to exhausting the list of topics the collection deals with. There’s a bunch more: the population bomb, race, biopolitics, outmoded institutions, the persistent humanities, linguistics …. I have not read every single essay yet, but I’ve come across some great ones—by Jaffe, Commentale, Soldat-Jaffe, and Eburne. When I read more of this awesome collection, I may jump back on and update this review!

In-depth material and a good read
By John Summerlot
Really enjoying reading it. It comes at the topic of zombies from so many different angles. It is very dense and not a "light read" unless maybe you are already a literary or film critic and already immersed in their language and philosophy. I'm not, but I've learned a lot in reading it. My only disappointment is that the Zombie Research Center doesn't actually exist and doesn't sell t-shirts.

Brainy and delicious.
By Bryan Jameson
A brainy analysis of zombies from the same dudes that brought you "The Year's Work in Lebowski," so you know you're going to get some seriously heady discourse with some biting wit and humor thrown in for good measure. It seems like every month there is a new comic, movie, or TV show about the undead; yet, none get into the guts of being a zombie. This book does a good job of actually exploring the cultural significance and the social commentary that the zombie genre is rooted in and all the contemporary examples arose from. A nice bonus is that the next time you are watching a zombie fight a tiger shark, and playing Zombie Bingo (conveniently located in the introduction), you can try having a meaningful conversation with your bonehead friends. Personally, I wish they included more on Weekend at Bernie's 2, but it is refreshing to have an academic book that is both meaty and accessible. I highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys zombie movies (or really any zombie related material), has half a brain, and wants to gain some insight into something they've only taken at skin level.

Solo Seniors - Women Travelers
By Kindle Customer
I truly enjoyed reading about her solo adventures...it's nice to know there are others like myself that love traveling, and will go regardless if there is no partner to travel with. I have found that I've met wonderful people along the way, and others seem to be more apt to reach out and talk with you, to include you in... I too am a senior woman, and SenI am proud that we older women are not afraid to venture out (my mother thinks it's so inappropriate)...if I don't do it, I will be missing so much, so why not?...and if I go, I gain the beauty and joy of seeing other lands , and meeting new people....I expand my horizons...
Gloria sets a great example to follow......I just wish she had mentioned a few things more, like what months she traveled, what year, and how old she was when she did this journey.....
I particularly liked her travel through Costa Rica, because I had traveled there as well, and I have interest in Panama, so I found the descriptions helpful, and adding the cost in every day a plus to give an idea on what you can get by on if you are careful....again, depending on when the book was written

Talking As Fast As I Can, by Lauren Graham

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this collection of personal essays, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood reveals stories about life, love, and working as a woman in Hollywood—along with behind-the-scenes dispatches from the set of the new Gilmore Girls, where she plays the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore once again.

In Talking as Fast as I Can, Lauren Graham hits pause for a moment and looks back on her life, sharing laugh-out-loud stories about growing up, starting out as an actress, and, years later, sitting in her trailer on the Parenthood set and asking herself, “Did you, um, make it?” She opens up about the challenges of being single in Hollywood (“Strangers were worried about me; that’s how long I was single!”), the time she was asked to audition her butt for a role, and her experience being a judge on Project Runway (“It’s like I had a fashion-induced blackout”).

In “What It Was Like, Part One,” Graham sits down for an epic Gilmore Girls marathon and reflects on being cast as the fast-talking Lorelai Gilmore. The essay “What It Was Like, Part Two” reveals how it felt to pick up the role again nine years later, and what doing so has meant to her.

Some more things you will learn about Lauren: She once tried to go vegan just to bond with Ellen DeGeneres, she’s aware that meeting guys at awards shows has its pitfalls (“If you’re meeting someone for the first time after three hours of hair, makeup, and styling, you’ve already set the bar too high”), and she’s a card-carrying REI shopper (“My bungee cords now earn points!”).

Including photos and excerpts from the diary Graham kept during the filming of the recent Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, this book is like a cozy night in, catching up with your best friend, laughing and swapping stories, and—of course—talking as fast as you can.

I smell snow...
By Emily
I wasn't originally going to review this book. The reasons being, to quote Chandler Bing, "are threefold": a. I love, love, love Lauren Graham; b. the book has some weird tangents that I can't in good conscience avoid mentioning c. I would never be able to bring myself to publicly critique this woman, who is an absolute genius, if I had truly negative things to say about the book (after all, I could never compromise my "reviewer's integrity").

Talking as Fast as I Can starts off extremely strongly, particularly if you listen to the audio (which highlights her acting abilities, including her singing...an added treat). The story begins as a memoir, discussing her upbringing and her jaunt into the wonderful world of acting. So far, so good. Lauren is self-deprecatingly hilarious and an extremely talented all-around artist, which includes a strong aptitude for writing. (Say what you will about the subject matter of the book, but Graham can write). Through the first section, about her early days as an actress in graduate school and then in a theater troupe, I was pleasantly engaged, with two thumbs up.

At that point, one of my thumbs started to waiver. The book, admittedly, takes some unexpected turns in the content department as it teeters between advice column, anecdotal essays, and personal stories, mostly out of chronological order. While it's fine to jump around in time - and it's fine to have a mixture of styles - the combination of styles and time periods is somewhat chaotic here. While I found the writing interesting and fun to hear, I was leaning towards not reviewing the book at this point... lest I not be able to give my girl, Lorelai, five well-earned stars.

Where Lauren starts to draw me back in is around the section that she discusses the importance of women lifting each other up and goes into a tale that focuses on giving advice to a younger generation. I will admit that, again, I wished I was reading more of a memoir, but her authenticity in this portion of the book is palpable. Lauren was twice a guest in the final season of "The Rosie O'Donnell Show," and she struck me then, in 2002 - as she did Rosie and later Ellen - as a true, down-to-earth, funny, kick-butt kind of gal (or something that sounds cooler than that but equally awesome). From those days forward (though I didn't get into Gilmore Girls and obviously Parenthood until much later), I knew I was a fan of Graham. Towards the back-half of the book, I started to recall that feeling: that she was my pal, decoupaging in the craft corner with Rosie.

When I knew, definitively, that I could give this book five stars (and mean it) is in the final section when Lauren discusses the Gilmore Girls revival. She is such a "real" person, and her account is so personal and touching. For fans of the show, this section alone makes Talking as Fast as I Can a must-have. Lauren is gracious and humble with an unbelievable work ethic and a positive attitude. Her stories might be slightly disjointed, but they're uplifting; they're positive; they're the kinds of life affirmations that so many of us need right now. Lauren is confident, self-aware, and legitimately nice... with a large dose of humor thrown in... and she's exactly the kind of role model - a person focused on the work before the glitz, glamour, fame, or fortune - that we should all be looking to for advice in today's world... a world filled with reality shows and Caviar dreams.

Sure, maybe her book is a little quirky. I like quirky. Quirky is a good thing.

So thank you Lauren for giving us a slice of your life and for pouring your heart into your characters that have touched so many of us over so many years. Thank you for being appreciative of your audience and for offering us guidance, taking us under your wing through this writing in a way that only you can.

Copperboom.

Love, love
By Katrina Michelle De Vries
Love, love, love this!!! From the moment I started reading I am laughing out loud. I adore the fact that Lauren writes the way that she comes across in interviews. Someone who is funny, sharp and willing to make fun of herself. I loved the analysis of the golf ball that fell out of her car and the way that she tries to protect her personal life. Or the character that she develops to hide her old lady tendencies. Lauren Graham is an amazing writer and she is now on my list of people I would love to share a coffee and lunch with.

it was funny and thoroughly enjoyable
By Living Life With Joy
As soon as I knew that Gilmore Girls was creating a Year in the Life on Netflix, I slowly began to make my way through watching all 7 seasons from start to finish to have the full series fresh in my mind. I wanted to complete all 7 seasons prior to watching the new shows, and although it took a long time, it was well worth the wait!

After watching the new Year in the Life episodes, it was time to read Lauren’s book Talking as Fast as I Can. Her novel reads in such a way that you feel as though you are spending time hanging out with Lauren and that she is telling you the story in person. Needless to say, it was funny and thoroughly enjoyable, though it was a quick read and I was sad it was over so soon.

After reading her book, I realized that I’d been living under a rock because I had never heard of the show she was on after Gilmore Girls called Parenthood. I started watching that show and again am thoroughly being entertained by Lauren and her new cast of family members. I’m almost through season 2 and thankful that there’s quite a few more.

I digress, this started off as a review for her book, didn’t it? The only thing you need to know about it, is that you should read it, and that you’re guaranteed to enjoy it. The end.

When We Are No More: How Digital Memory Is Shaping Our Future, by Abby Smith Rumsey

Our memory gives the human species a unique evolutionary advantage. Our stories, ideas, and innovations--in a word, our "culture"--can be recorded and passed on to future generations. Our enduring culture and restless curiosity have enabled us to invent powerful information technologies that give us invaluable perspective on our past and define our future. Today, we stand at the very edge of a vast, uncharted digital landscape, where our collective memory is stored in ephemeral bits and bytes and lives in air-conditioned server rooms. What sources will historians turn to in 100, let alone 1,000 years to understand our own time if all of our memory lives in digital codes that may no longer be decipherable?

In When We Are No More Abby Smith Rumsey explores human memory from pre-history to the present to shed light on the grand challenge facing our world--the abundance of information and scarcity of human attention. Tracing the story from cuneiform tablets and papyrus scrolls, to movable type, books, and the birth of the Library of Congress, Rumsey weaves a compelling narrative that explores how humans have dealt with the problem of too much information throughout our history, and indeed how we might begin solve the same problem for our digital future. Serving as a call to consciousness, When We Are No More explains why data storage is not memory; why forgetting is the first step towards remembering; and above all, why memory is about the future, not the past.

"If we're thinking 1,000 years, 3,000 years ahead in the future, we have to ask ourselves, how do we preserve all the bits that we need in order to correctly interpret the digital objects we create? We are nonchalantly throwing all of our data into what could become an information black hole without realizing it." --Vint Cerf, Chief Evangelist at Google, at a press conference in February, 2015.

Review

"[A] wide-ranging rumination on cultural memory . . . Rumsey draws a powerful analogy to underscore memory’s materiality." ―Washington Post Book World

"The goal of When We Are No More . . . is to challenge us to consider more seriously how the consequences of our current data deluge will influence society moving forward. In that, Rumsey succeeds admirably." ―Science

"[An] erudite treatise on how the digitization of archival technology makes it all too easy to rewrite our cultural past." ―Nature

"For anyone skeptical about the increasing reliance on digital media, Rumsey eases concern by revisiting information inflations of the past, simultaneously conveying the importance of the issue to a more general readership." ―Publishers Weekly

"This book presents a fascinating view into how the mind’s memory functions and all the external devices that complement this aspect of consciousness." ―San Francisco Book Review

"Rumsey takes us on a lucid and deeply thought-provoking journey into what makes the human species unique--the capacity to create external memory. This book will change how you think about our collective store of knowledge, and its future." ―Paul Saffo, Consulting Professor, Stanford University School of Engineering

"What Oliver Sacks did for the physical mind, Abby Smith Rumsey is doing for our evolving digital mind--making the history and complexity of our collective memory vital to everyone." ―Brewster Kahle, Founder of the Internet Archive

"One of the paradoxes of our time is that we live with so much information at our fingertips that we can barely remember anything. How future generations will recall the things that we did and said--if they recall us at all--is the subject of this deeply absorbing book. With the grace and clarity that come from years of reflection, Abby Smith Rumsey illuminates a serious set of problems at the heart of our endlessly self-Googling culture." ―Ted Widmer, former Director and Librarian of the John Carter Brown Library, Brown University

"This book is a thoughtful and urgent call to action that is essential reading for all who care about diversity, sustainability, and the advancement of knowledge. Digital memory presents a new challenge; Rumsey provides inspiring insights into the ways in which past challenges have been met and offers a compelling argument to drive the development of new ideas and solutions to this looming threat of inestimable loss." ―Sarah E. Thomas, Vice President for the Harvard Library and University Librarian

"'Thoughts that come on doves' feet steer the world,' said Nietzsche. Abby Smith Rumsey’s welcome new book on the importance of digital memory to our shared past--and still more, our shared future--wears its learning and its lessons lightly. But make no mistake. It is a manifesto that comes on doves’ feet, and it comes at a critical juncture, as we begin to envision the memory systems that will be in place ‘when we are no more.’" ―Max Marmor, President, Samuel H. Kress Foundation

"As pixels fly by on our multiplying screens, Rumsey reminds us that we have unwittingly committed our modern forms of expression to formats that are all too fragile, dependent on hardware and software that quickly become dated and unusable. With a kaleidoscopic view of history--from Sumerian tablets to the libraries of Montaigne and Jefferson--and a critical analysis of how our minds use recorded information, she warns us that without devoting more attention to digital preservation we will end up with a cultural disorder akin to Alzheimer's, where we live in a troubling, constant present, with little ability to imagine the future. Ensuring perpetual access to our shared culture is one of the most pressing issues of our digital age, and this compelling, important book is a call and plan for doing so." ―Dan Cohen, Founding Director, Digital Public Library of America

"Abby Smith Rumsey’s excellent When We Are No More takes a . . . long view of our contemporary anxieties over knowledge preservation . . . Her book is especially good at charting the changing shape of the institutions to which we have entrusted (or outsourced) our collective memory." ―Wall Street Journal

"In a fascinating, out-of-the-box rumination on the digital age, Abby Smith Rumsey worries that the information monopolists of our day - Google and Facebook - might end up fostering a monoculture not unlike the Christian rulers and Islamic caliphate that purged pagan texts from the Great Library of Alexandria in ancient times." - WorldPost

A historical account, not a strategy for preserving knowledge.
By Mandrake
I was expecting more "solutions" to this important issue.
A lot of the text goes back in history to show the evolution on how we recorded events.
A relatively small portion is dedicated to 'today'.

I thought the article brought up some interesting ideas and that her new book would be good for discussion
By J. Nolt
I selected "When We Are No More" for a librarians' book group this summer after reading Rumsey's article, "The Risk of Digital Oblivion" in The Chronicle of Higher Education. I thought the article brought up some interesting ideas and that her new book would be good for discussion. It was, although not quite in the ways I'd hoped.

The organization is not what I expected; it takes what appear to be random and erratic tangents into anecdotes about historical figures that are never tied back into the main themes. In particular, Thomas Jefferson makes numerous appearances, but no one in our group could figure out why by the end of the book.

While I respect Rumsey's efforts to take a cross-disciplinary approach, I am not confident in her expertise in most of the fields she touches on. She makes sweeping states to support her conclusions (often in combination with the use of the royal "we") some of which are questionable, and some of which are factually inaccurate. As an example of a questionable statement, she informs us "today we see books as natural facts. We do not see them as memory machines with lives of their own, though that is exactly what they are." (p. 177). Whoever her "we" is, it often excludes me. In an example of factual inaccuracy, she states that "the moral is that in Nature, more is better than less" (p. 162) to support her argument that data should be stored redundantly. Life uses a plethora of evolutionary strategies; our own species is a case against her point of "more is better than less" since we spend extensive resources raising, protecting, and teaching our comparatively few offspring.

Rumsey is also dismissive of the technical underpinnings of her arguments: "Solving search across so much information will also be nontrivial, as computer engineers are fond of saying. But these are technical matters, no matter how complicated" (p. 167). She seems to be making the assumption that all technical matters are inherently solvable, which is not an assumption I am comfortable making.

"Memory is about the future, not the past", states the jacket, and so she reiterates throughout the text. It's an argument I was very curious to see explored, and yet no clearer on the idea by the end then at the beginning. In fact, we spent most of our discussion time trying to follow the logical leaps and conceptual hops Rumsey makes throughout the text. Several people mentioned that it seemed like the book was rushed to press, and that it needed a good editor.

One person attempting to integrate as many disciplines and concepts as Rumsey tackles is a Herculean task, and she is not Hercules. Perhaps this very interesting idea for a book would be better explored in a series of essays by individual subject matter experts. "When We Are No More" touches on a lot of interesting ideas, concepts, and fields, but does not connect them into a cohesive whole.

A Look in the Mirror: Remembering and Forgetting
By Jeff La Deur
As a concert pianist, I deal with the ephemeral nature of 'data' every day. Some of my most treasured possessions are the old scores I study, passed down from several generations of teachers and students. The scores are already an approximation of the composer's expression, a necessary comprise made in order to render one's imaginative creation in a form accessible to others. Something essential is lost in translation, but it is better than the alternative of never receiving the message at all. This is true for all manuscripts- they are a shell of the original inspiration. And yet, to hold the thing itself brings a sense of wonder- in fact, multiple senses: the smell of old paper, the faded pencil marks, the very real fragility of it in your hands.

We have lost that sense of wonder for the information we possess, partly due to its wild abundance, but also to our diminishing capacity to receive it.

When We Are No More is written in the artistic spirit of many of the subjects addressed therein, provoking timely, ethical questions rather than offering what could only be superficial solutions. Artists tend to be embrace the ambiguity of such complexities, leaning into the gap rather than hurrying to patch it up. Reading this with the expectation of a nail in the coffin answer to everything is sophomoric and short sighted.

This book necessarily spends time setting up the call to action by exploring how we got to where we are. It is written in a way that is approachable, engaging, and ultimately, musical. I have enjoyed it thoroughly and am looking forward to rereading it, not only for the substance of its content, but the beauty of its eloquence.

Valuable workbook for 'Trauma and the Therapist' text
By Shannon G. Converse (sconverse@psn.net)
Let there be no doubt that this book and it's companion text 'Trauma and the Therapist' is a book written for professionals, not for lay persons. While some laypersons who enjoy and understand heavy psychological reading may thoroughly enjoy both books, this work book is geared toward the trauma encountered by the therapist (vicarious traumatization) while treating victims of severe abuse. It is not geared toward the client. It is about time that someone write a book and workbook for the professional who can endure as much trauma, vicariously, as the victim, particularly if treating a number of abuse victims. The impact on the professional had been ignored for two long. This workbook is written for the professional mental health provider more than the client. As is it's companion text. It is a terrific workbook if viewed with that perspective.

Helpful book for clinicians needing self care
By CentralCA
This book was recommended to me because I was looking for ideas for self care to cope with working with the sex offender population. The book provides useful information on vicarious traumatization, how to recognize it, and ways to manage it. I am an Art Therapist and it has some creative and expressive techniques to handle feelings of vicarious traumatization that working with the abused or offender populations can bring up.

An outstanding program for workplaces.
By Catherine SwagMom
I have used this workbook for years in the field of continuing education for human service professionals. The activities are without exception always well received and truly helpful to participants. Very few books present the facilitator steps so clearly. This book is appropriate for any organization that serves people in crisis or trauma. I don't see how you could go wrong if you follow the format pesented.

Shadows in the Twilight: Conversations with a Shaman, by Lujan Matus, W L Ham

When W. L. Ham approaches the Nagual Lujan Matus for insight into enigmatic events that have marked his awareness, what he learns revolutionizes everything he thought he knew. Realizing that he has found an authentic guide, Bill enters into a intensive apprenticeship and directly begins to experience the multiplex of luminous interactivity that is our living matrix as never before. Like countless others, Bill had been galvanized when concepts like ‘the energy double’, ‘dreaming awareness’, and ‘first and second attention’, were introduced in the 1960s. Exploring these fascinating propositions in his own waking and dreaming life, he is faced with discoveries and challenges utterly unaccounted for by conventional definitions of reality. Bill begins faithfully documenting his exchanges with Lujan, and the result is a most extraordinary manual on the crucial yet little understood subject of reclaiming our dimensional sovereignty. A friendly flow of dialogue belies the gravity of this material, as Lujan deftly elucidates the very fabric of existence with humble yet unequivocal authority. These are no second-hand sorcery tales but genuine revelations from a seer bound by his inevitability to communicate what he knows. Describing the innermost workings of the holographic universe with rare precision, these teachings decode riddles of perception that have long been surrounded with confusion, providing a luminous bridge to our interdimensional potential as human beings. The sometimes-alarming nature of what Lujan reveals is tempered by the multifaceted affirmation that the key to finding freedom lies in truly applying ourselves to the moment that continually escapes us, guided only by that most precious instrument of divination, our heart.

About the Author
Lujan Matus is a powerful shaman who at the age of seven was initiated into a lineage of ancient seers and instructed in the parallel realms of dreaming and waking realities. His primary teacher and benefactor was the old nagual Lujan – an oriental shaman – who imparted to him many treasures, including a variety of shamanic practices. A nagual is a teacher in the shamanic tradition; a guide who assists others to enter into an enhanced awareness and altered perception. Lujan Matus is carrying on in the tradition of his benefactor to assist people all over the world to expand their potential and achieve greater fulfillment in their lives. Lujan is the author of three books, “The Art of Stalking Parallel Perception“, “Awakening the Third Eye” and “Shadows in the Twilight“. He offers private courses and group workshops in various locations around the world as well as online shamanic tuition.

Finally! Light on the Shadows
By IMRI
Great Book! Direct, clear discussions on key topics relevant to personal growth, many pertaining to important Toltec concepts introduced, but not fully clarified by Castaneda. Theory gets context so following the heart of the topic and transferring it to 'real life' is easy. I am impressed and relieved by this book which is a great text for the perplexed.

Some topics include:
- The Inorganic Beings and predators/flyers:
Lujan explains how inorganic beings do and can affect one, in dreaming and here in the first attention. Examples offer insight and as always the stark relevance of all this to you and your life. This casts light on the shadows, the darker side of our reality, to make it absolutely clear what we are up against for our evolution and freedom.

- The Attentions/states of consciousness:
explained: lucidly the nature and progression of the first attention, the second attention, the third attention as well as the fourth attention. How one achieves fourth attention consciousness -as a practical reality.

- The Double:
the above interweaves with hitherto unknown details about the double, what the double is and is not, how the double fits into our lives and its role in evolution. Most eye-opening.

- Toltec mystery:
The Toltec teachings has long been presented in rather esoteric terms in the "classics", leaving much room for interpretations that harm both the warrior and his or her environment. This is addressed.

This book is NOT confined to Toltec aficionados. The application and value is relevant to all people from any background. However, if the "Toltec path" is what you wish to follow, this is a Key route marker of a new gateway.

Conclusion:
Throughout the conversations Lujan manages to impart a new feel and contextualization for the truths that propel true evolution. Reading induces an experience that puts you at the center of learning. Those who want the gist so they can get on with it will find it here.

Important knowledge finally revealed!
By Johannes Schroeder
This book presents, amongst other facts, the most striking knowledge and in- depth description of the shadow beings, and their devastating effect on individual consciousness as well as on humanity as a whole.
This knowledge, that was long hidden in shamanic traditions, finally finds it's way to the surface and to the collective consciousness in this book.
This book comes at the right time in 2012 in order to contribute to a jump in consciousness and awareness, by clearly revealing what are the true enemies of humans: not our past, not other humans, but the presence of the shadow beings which inhibit individual and collective advancement. The mere awakening to this knowledge contributes for humans to take the step out of these devastating effects, to finally become independent and free.
A must-read and a must-study book!

Journey beyond the illusion
By Luma Chichiwa
This book challenges the propositions established from years of stagnant knowledge about dreaming and energy, knowledge and knowing, living and dying; then brings them back into a communal ownership of knowing by illuminating the necessary action required to move beyond our current perception of reality and what is possible. While there are no easy answers or confuscated concepts, the truth and simplicity of the ideas expressed by the Nagual Lujan cut through the illusions of knowledge with uncomfortable precision.

Beyond what most call day-to-day living is our potential, entwined with many variables challenging that potential. For many the journey for growth becomes a search that is looped with more confusing answers, misdirecting energy and focus in pursuit of knowledge that does not often bring about inner knowing and development of that potential. Here, one receives what one needs at each moment of interacting with the energy embedded within the book by tapping into the awareness of inner knowing. The book empowers the reader to reclaim the potential for our journey of evolution one layer of knowing at a time and one energetic step at a time in ways that continue to astound me. It is a great gift and a beacon so that we may remember our selves and our journey.

Thank you, Bill and Lujan.

Piano Technique: Tone, Touch, Phrasing & Dynamics, by Lillie H. Philipp

Practice is indeed the soul of piano technique and this concise handbook — by a noted pianist and teacher — tells you how to get the most out of it. It is a working manual, containing technical studies, excerpts from the works of the great piano masters, and photographs — all of which help the students develop a sound technique in a comparatively short time.
Beginning with such elemental topics as seating position, hand and finger positions, and scales, the author proceeds to trilling, exercises, thumb exercises, four-finger exercises, accent, tone production, chords, fingering, pedaling, phrasing, sight-reading, and other essentials of keyboard art.
Ms. Philipp has distilled the experience of a lifetime of playing and teaching (she studied with students of Liszt and Busoni) into a highly useful guide for all piano students. The text is replete with hints and suggestions for developing better technique:
Melody — If you want a melody to sing, keep the accompanying figuration softer and you will get the desired effect.
Practice — Practicing pianissimo, as many great pianists have been known to do, will help further technique and improve velocity.
Pedaling — If you want an individual tone to be particularly beautiful, catch it with the pedal just after you have hit it.
These hints, and a host of others, are complemented by 63 musical excerpts from the masters — Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Bartk, Mendelssohn, Liszt — and numerous exercises illustrating various technical, stylistic, and musical approaches. Close-up photographs indicate proper positioning of hands and fingers to achieve the proper playing skills and practicing techniques.
Pianists at all levels can benefit from careful study of this unique book — beginners will find it particularly helpful in acquiring a thorough knowledge of the essentials; intermediate and advanced pianists will appreciate its review of basic principles and the author's authentic and interesting treatment of problems concerned with the study of the piano.

A fine overview of pianism
By Dr. Dave
Philipp's "Piano Technique" provides a fine overview of the fundamentals of playing the piano. The book covers important topics such as position at the piano, arm weight, technical exercises, tone and touch, pedaling, phrasing, musical styles, and much more. There are also copies illustrations and examples from the piano repertoire.

The traditions of technique, artistry and interpretation that are handed down from one generation of great pianists to the next are of paramount importance, and will always continue to be. Pianism is not a science, nor is it much informed by the scientific method, any more than is the case with oil painting, sculpture, or theater arts; it is an aesthetic art form--a different realm altogether. Books like Josef Gat's "The Technique of Playing the Piano" that included tedious explanations of human anatomy have since been found by professors of anatomy to be rife with misapprehensions, errors, and deficient explanations. (Other than that, there is much value to be found elsewhere in his book.) Thankfully, that kind of pseudoscience or mythology has been debunked by the experts in that field.

Even when anatomical information is correct, such explanations have limited practical application and value. For example, if it takes pronation of the forearm rather than supination, or requires ulnar flexion rather tha radial flexion of the hand to play one figure or another, well... then that's what it takes! Far more important to the well-being of pianists is simple but conscientious attention to the basic and proven principles of ergonomics which are becoming much better known and practiced. Philipp's book predates ergonomics as such, but to her credit, her advice on sitting properly at the instrument and properly using the playing mechanism of body, upper arm, forearm, wrist, hand and fingers in artistic piano playing is still absolutely valid and timeless.

There have been, before and since, better and more in-depth books written about playing the piano, but Philipp's book still serves as a wonderful teaching tool for intermediate pianists and a good review for advanced pianists. As an accomplished pianist, for years I've collected books on piano performance and pedagogy and am pleased to have Philipp's book in my library.
