They have stalked the horizons of our culture, wreaked havoc on moribund concepts of dead and not dead, threatened our sense of identity, and endangered our personal safety. Now zombies have emerged from the lurking shadows of society’s fringes to wander the sacred halls of the academy, feasting on tender minds and hurling rot across our intellectual landscape. It is time to unite in common cause, to shore up defenses, firm up critical and analytical resources, and fortify crumbling lines of inquiry. Responding to this call, Brain Workers from the Zombie Research Center poke and prod the rotting corpus of zombie culture trying to make sense of cult classics and the unstoppable growth of new and even more disturbing work. They exhume "zombie theory" and decaying historical documents from America, Europe, and the Caribbean in order to unearth the zombie world and arm readers with the brain tools necessary for everyday survival. Readers will see that zombie culture today "lives" in shapes as mutable as a zombie horde―and is often just as violent.

Review
"Variously playful and (un)deadly serious..." ―Times Literary Supplement
"An intelligent and highly engaging collection that will appeal to legions of zombie fans, to students in the humanities, and to scholars working in fields that have already been affected by or are now preparing for the zombie apocalypse. It blends entertaining, illuminating, and accessible readings of zombies and zombie culture with unique interventions made from authoritative positions of expertise." ―Julian Murphet, author of Multimedia Modernism: Literature and the Anglo-American Avant-Garde
"There are so many great things to discuss about this awesome science fiction/horror genre, and the The Year's Work team of Commentate and Jaffe tackle it admirably. There are a number of home runs in this collection." ―boing boing

The Answer to Infection is Here

Why should you buy this book? B R A I N S ! And plenty of it for your enjoyment!
Witty and punny, this delicious book is teeming with smart essays on the interminable and ubiquitous cultural phenomenon of zombies.
What accounts for the never-ending interest in/popularity of zombies? In the intro, Commentale and Jaffe provide lots of interesting reasons (because there are lots of different kinds of zombie). First, there’s our psychological fixation on the way the familiar and securely-seated past has the potential to rise up and become deeply weird. Or on how the stuff we we’ve always loved and desired is actually gross and disgusting. Beyond the personal/psychological, we also seemed to be much more freaked out these days about the larger hazards and risks that we thought were over-and-done-with, such as the soul-destroying operations of global capitalism or the long-term dangers of pollution. Moreover, we now live in a world in which, as the editors say, “nothing seems to die anymore.” We spend hours in “the massive digital crypt,” exposed to the strange temporality of our electronic world and its terrifyingly infinite archival power. And finally, we’re living in a nightmarish condition that Mad Men tries to sketch out in lighter colors -- the endlessly regenerative nature of commodity culture, its mind-numbing sequels, and next-best-things. This condition has an etymology that includes of course the history of Haiti, the dehumanization of slavery, and the ruined humanity in the wake of imperial conquest.
In addition to being an expression of disapproval and critique (we are dead in the midst of life), zombies also seem to be attempts to imagine how to live in the midst of these widespread conditions. Punk appropriations of futureless anarchy, as this book points out, are ways of inhabiting the waste land. Even more punk is the fact that the zombie can do more than point to some well-known meaning or allegory (we’re all mindless consumers; AIDS is gonna get you; your most cherished self is actually a hilariously monstrous and mostly mechanical body); the zombie is the figure who kills the very fantasy of permanent and necessary meanings. And that is so scary that we MUST try to kill the zombie first! Last one to kill is a rotten egg!
I haven’t come close to exhausting the list of topics the collection deals with. There’s a bunch more: the population bomb, race, biopolitics, outmoded institutions, the persistent humanities, linguistics …. I have not read every single essay yet, but I’ve come across some great ones—by Jaffe, Commentale, Soldat-Jaffe, and Eburne. When I read more of this awesome collection, I may jump back on and update this review!

In-depth material and a good read
By John Summerlot
Really enjoying reading it. It comes at the topic of zombies from so many different angles. It is very dense and not a "light read" unless maybe you are already a literary or film critic and already immersed in their language and philosophy. I'm not, but I've learned a lot in reading it. My only disappointment is that the Zombie Research Center doesn't actually exist and doesn't sell t-shirts.

Brainy and delicious.
By Bryan Jameson
A brainy analysis of zombies from the same dudes that brought you "The Year's Work in Lebowski," so you know you're going to get some seriously heady discourse with some biting wit and humor thrown in for good measure. It seems like every month there is a new comic, movie, or TV show about the undead; yet, none get into the guts of being a zombie. This book does a good job of actually exploring the cultural significance and the social commentary that the zombie genre is rooted in and all the contemporary examples arose from. A nice bonus is that the next time you are watching a zombie fight a tiger shark, and playing Zombie Bingo (conveniently located in the introduction), you can try having a meaningful conversation with your bonehead friends. Personally, I wish they included more on Weekend at Bernie's 2, but it is refreshing to have an academic book that is both meaty and accessible. I highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys zombie movies (or really any zombie related material), has half a brain, and wants to gain some insight into something they've only taken at skin level.
