Clinical chapters study the sophisticated simultaneous ambulatory EKG and EEG telemetry and respiratory function monitoring of patients at risk for sudden death that will help identify cardiac, respiratory, and epileptogenic interactions involved. Chapters on animal models evaluate new data from studies that build on previously used models and emphasize that multiple models are needed to investigate the pathophysiology of SUDEP, to hypothesize about effective treatments, to develop pilot studies in persons with epilepsy, and to conduct confirmatory large-scale clinical trials.

Contributions discuss the interaction between the central and peripheral autonomic nervous systems and the cardiopulmonary systems; proposed mechanistic factors in SUDEP; risk categories of arrhythmogenic, respiratory, and hypoxia related cardiac death; psychological, emotional, and stress related factors; the role of alcohol and drugs in seizures; and the potential mitigating properties of antiepileptic medication.

Adopting a global, multidisciplinary focus to address the mystery of SUDEP, this important work provides clinicians, researchers, patients, and families with the knowledge to freely discuss the phenomenon and thereby discover the preventive treatment regimens to decrease the occurrence of SUDEP.

good but not well organized

This book helped me on a paper i am working on right now. yet it needed to be more organized. There is no clear delineation between what the author mentions as forensic and clinical issues . for example risk factors are put under forensic issues. Afterall , i would recommend this book as it's the only recent book i know that thoroughly discussed this topic.

Very impressed by this textbook. Its scope is comprehensive and the content is accurate, detailed and up to date while including key findings over the past 40 years. I would highly recommend this textbook to researchers interested in Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy.

It is useful to English learners

This dictionary lists many phrases that are used in various common situations, such as 'at the grocery store', 'at a fast-food restaurant' ,'welcoming a guest', etc. It is useful to English learners, since they don't have to worry about building the sentence or choosing the right vocabulary word; that's already done for them. I do think some phrases are either outdated or too informal/slang, so students should consult a teacher/a native speaker before they use all the suggested language.

Fantastic for people learning English

I am a native English speaker, and don't think I'd bother purchasing something like this . But, I recently had a friend visiting from overseas, and he came across this book while shopping at a local book store. He purchased it for himself, and after looking through it, I was very impressed. There are a couple of outdated expressions that might cause people to do a double-take if they heard them, but for the most part, the book does a great job of listing many relevant phrases. I was so impressed that I purchased another copy to send to another friend overseas who loves learning English.

One improvement that could be made is a better organizational system. The index is ok, but not great. It's good for finding new phrases to express certain feelings or ideas, but not for seeing if unusual expressions are already listed. I recall upsetting a former boyfriend for calling him "crabby" one day. With this dictionary, there is no way to look up the word crabby and see what it means in casual English. For that reason, I think a digital version of this book would be preferable.

I teach ESL to adults and am a big fan of this book, and the format of this book. I'm using it in my lessons with advanced students looking to perfect their understanding of, and confidence with idiomatic expressions in American English. Very straight forward format.

About the Author
GREG GRAFFIN is a singer, songwriter, lecturer, and solo artist. In addition to founding the band Bad Religion in 1980, he began a lifelong pursuit of evolution. He obtained his Ph.D. in zoology at Cornell and a master’s in geology at the University of California, Los Angeles. While lecturing at UCLA and at Cornell, he coauthored Anarchy Evolution (with Steve Olson). Greg received the Bryan Patterson Prize from the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, the Rushdie Prize from the Harvard University Humanist Chaplaincy, the American Humanist Association Arts Award, and the Sapio Prize from the International League of Non-Religious and Atheists. He travels regularly between the cities he considers home: Ithaca, New York, and Los Angeles, California.

As a Bad Religion fan, I always kept up with Greg's career in evolutionary biology, but aside the songs written, I never paid much attention to how well educated and well versed he is. This book is a fantastic read and just what you'd expect, a sociological punk rock viewpoint of our society. Fantastic read.
