The Oxford History of the Biblical WorldFrom Oxford University Press

Here, in one impressively illustrated volume, leading scholars offer compelling glimpses into the biblical world, the world in which prophets, poets, sages, and historians created one of our most important texts--the Bible.
For more than a century, archeologists have been unearthing the tombs, temples, texts, and artifacts of the ancient Near East and the Mediterranean world. Using new approaches, contemporary scholars have begun to synthesize this material with the biblical traditions. The Oxford History of the Biblical World incorporates the best of this scholarship, and in chronologically ordered chapters presents the reader with a readable and integrated study of the history, art, architecture, languages, literatures, and religion of biblical Israel and early Judaism and Christianity in their larger cultural contexts. The authors also examine such issues as the roles of women, the tensions between urban and rural settings, royal and kinship social structures, and official and popular religions of the region. Readers will find that 200 photographs, line drawings, and maps as well as an insert containing 25 color photographs vividly illustrate the history discussed.
Understanding the biblical world is a vital part of understanding the Bible. Broad, authoritative, and visually engaging, The Oxford History of the Biblical World will illuminate for any reader the ancient world from which the Bible emerged.

From Library Journal
Coogan (religious studies, Stonehill Coll.) has assembled a dozen scholars with impressive credentials in ancient Near Eastern studies to assist him in creating this work of immense scope. These contributors bring varied perspectives to their work as they draw from new primary and secondary sources based on recent archaeological excavations (often their own) and on translations of texts such as the Dead Sea Scrolls. Organized chronologically, the essays explore the many cultures of ancient Canaan, Israel, Judea, and Palestine from 10,000 B.C.E. to the rise of Islam in the seventh century C.E. Illustrations, maps, charts, chronologies, and bibliographies enhance the uniformly well-written essays. But the strengths of the work are its currency and breadth of coverage and perspective. Appropriate for all libraries with collections in religion or Near Eastern studies, and of particular interest to students of biblical history and archaeology. Review

"The Oxford History of the Biblical World is first-class. It merits the highest praise for the best one-volume work on the Biblical World in the world. It covers the vast sweep of the biblical story with great economy in wordage, but misses nothing of importance."--David Noel Freedman, Department of History, University of California, San Diego

"The book is excellent from every point of view."--Philip J. King, Boston College

About the Author

Michael D. Coogan received a Ph.D. in Near Eastern languages and literatures from Harvard University. He has excavated in Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, and Egypt. The coeditor ofThe Oxford Companion to the Bible and author of many other books and publications, he is currently director of publications for the Harvard Semitic Museum and professor of religious studies at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts.

Get the hardcover edition, not the paperback
By Voldomer
This truly is an excellent resource, as discussed by other reviewers. Unfortunately, though, the paperback version is not just a reprint of the hardback in floppy covers. Instead, many of the visual features that contribute so much to the appeal of the hardback edition have been removed. Admittedly several remain, including a section of color plates in the middle of the book, but one who is familiar with the hardback likely will be disappointed by the paperback.

The perfect textbook of Biblical history
By Andrew K. Wong
If I ever had to teach a course in Biblical history, this would be the required text. I would also assign Coogan's excellent "The Oxford Companion to the Bible" (B. Metzger & M. Coogan, eds.; Oxford UP: 1993) as supplemental reading. While "The Oxford Companion" is a one volume encyclopedia of general historical and theological Biblical topics, the "Oxford History" affords the most detailed and systematic (and illustrated) treatment of Biblical history and archaeology of the two. The two works complement each other very well.
"The Oxford History of the Biblical World" is a single volume work of outstanding scholarship and clarity. Thirteen chapters comprise the text (the prologue and epilogue are just as informative as the substantive chapters), each written by prominent experts in ancient Near-Eastern history. There is a consistent unity throughout the chapters despite their disparate authorships. Each chapter is thoroughly steeped in the history, geography, economics, culture and religion of the period. Lavish attention is given to the most current archaeological and etymological findings. There are also copious references to and excerpts of the most important secular texts of the period.
This solid foundation of scholarship gives the work a first-class objectivity. Both traditional and modern conclusions are explored in depth. While certain facts may give rise to multiple conclusions, the authors invariably make plain all available evidence for the reader.
The volume is richly illustrated. Most pictures are in black and white, but with excellent resolution. The 26 beautiful color plates are in the middle of the book. Among the illustrations are diagrams and photos of current archaeological excavations, excellent maps of varying themes and useful tables and charts. Font size is 11 point and 1.5 spaced.
The editors and contributors make Biblical history extremely accessible to the lay reader. This volume, however, does not have footnotes. It does have a select bibliography at the end of each chapter. The text flow is smooth and easy to follow.
No Bible historian should be without it!

A world apart, yet part of us
By FrKurt Messick
Archaeology, for much of the past few centuries, has set out to 'prove' the Bible. More recently the pendulum has swung the other way, in which some scholars have attempted to 'disprove' the Bible. Much archaeology and historical research is still biased, but fortunately it has become scholarly practice to at least admit one's biases as a prelude to making assertions and posing theories. Also, a greater objectivity in many regards has been infused into historical research, so that those texts that seem to be predominantly slanted in one direction or the other tend to be given less credibility (particularly as, for instance, if someone sets out 'to prove' the Bible, what they are usually doing is attempting to do is to prove their interpretation or specific reading of the Bible, rather than the Bible itself).
All of this is preamble to my review of this latest work. Volumes can be (and have been) written in discussion of the effect of biased research on scholarship. This is discussed in the preface. `Within the last decade, some scholars have adopted what has come to be called a minimalist approach to ancient Israel. In its most extreme form, this approach discounts the Bible as a credible witness because of the ideological bias of its historical narratives and because they were written centuries after the times they purport to describe.'
Michael Coogan, editor of this volume, disapproves of the dominance of extreme minimalism, and strives with his contributors to take account carefully and critically the Biblical accounts along with all other data.
This is a well-researched book. The contributors include Wayne Pitard, Carol Redmount, Lawrence Stager, Jo Ann Hackett, Carol Meyers, Edward Campbell, Jr., Mordechai Cogan, Mary Joan Winn Leith, Leonard Greenspoon, Amy-Jill Levine, Daniel Schowalter, and Barbara Geller. As Coogan says in his introduction,
Coogan's analysis begins with the pre-history of the Syro-Palestinian region (something often neglected in such studies); from there, it expands to include Egypt and the fertile crescent. The historic timeline includes the pre-history, Bronze Age, Egyptian influences, the eras of Judges and early monarchy, the divided kingdoms, the conquest and exile, the Persian period, the Hellenistic period, the time of the Roman occupation, and finally the emergence of Christianity and the differing trajectories of Christianity and Judaism in the Roman Empire.
By academic standards, this text is generous with photographs, drawings, and maps (but it is by no means the high-gloss, coffee-table sort of book).
This is an important recent contribution to the important task of providing context for the Bible and the development of the three great Middle Eastern religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. `The Bible is one of the foundational texts of our culture of of the three major monotheistic traditions... It is a complex document--a set of anthologies, in fact. Thus, to fully understand the Bible requires a knowledge of the contexts in which it was produced, the many cultures of the ancient Near East and the ancient Mediterranean--the biblical world.'
The scope is vast and wide-ranging, covering thousands of years and a wide geographical area, incorporating several different cultures and languages. Each chapter in this volume can be read as a stand-alone article, but each is best served in relation to the others. Each also contains a selected bibliography for further reading and research. In addition to covering more traditional topics of historical and archaeological interest, articles address social concerns, the role of women, urban/rural tensions, and incorporate many of the latest discoveries.
Worthy of the Oxford Press.

Great read. Enjoyed it thoroughly.
By Brock C.
I recently purchased this after reading an article online and thoroughly enjoyed it. The artwork is beautiful and gritty. Plot was a bit predictable as far as crime stories go so I'm hoping it develops in the following releases. I'm newer to the graphic novel / comic book scene and this was a great way to expand in to some other territory that isn't a classic super hero story. Overall a great read.

What if becoming beautiful was as simple as catching an STD?
By Spidey
This is what I love about Image today. You sometimes get blindsided by these graphic novels that come out from authors / writers you aren't familiar with. This book is fantastic! Great art, great story. I love the premise of the book. There's an STD out there that makes you beautiful. Of course, everyone wants to get it without seeing if there are any side effects. There's an intriguing conspiracy involved. Even though the book pretty much ties up the story, I'd love to see another volume. I feel like there's much more to the story that could be explored.

Received an advance copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Is beauty worth dying for?
By Allysa Peck
I received an AR copy of The Beauty from Net Galley in exchange for an unbiased review.

The Beauty is a story about a society that is overrun by an STD that makes a person beautiful. Of course, if it seems too good to be true, that's because it is, and that is what this comic is all about. Right from the get go, this comic caught my attention. The artwork is fantastic, and the story is creepily realistic.; The idea of people purposely catching a virus because it makes them "beautiful" is something that's eerily real, that I could really see happening. It certainly makes a person sit back and think about the price of vanity, even in our current society.

Of course, this is merely the first of several volumes, and it definitely leaves you wanting more. If you like graphic novels and you like horror, I would definitely recommend this comic.

Thus Spoke Zarathustra: A Book for Everyone and Nobody (Oxford World's Classics), by Friedrich Nietzsche

hus Spake Zarathustra is a masterpiece of literature as well as philosophy. It was Nietzsche's own favorite and has proved to be his most popular. In this book he addresses the problem of how to live a fulfilling life in a world without meaning, in the aftermath of "the death of God." His solution lies in the idea of eternal recurrence, which he calls "the highest formula of affirmation that can ever be attained." A successful engagement with this profoundly Dionysian idea enables us to choose clearly among the myriad possibilities that existence offers, and thereby to affirm every moment of our lives with others on this "sacred" earth.
Grahm Parkes's new translation is more accurate than previous versions, and is the first to retain the musicality of the original, by paying attention to the rhythms and cadences of the German. His introduction examines the work's three most important philosophical ideas and for the first time annotates the abundance of allusions to the Bible and other classic texts with which Nietzsche's masterpiece is in conversation.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

EVEN BETTER THAN THE OLD ONE!
By Alexei Fyodorovich
This is a good, straightforward and fairly literal translation, with helpful notes -- not too many, but useful. I much prefer it to the work of Walter Kaufmann which has for a long time been standard fare for university reading. Walter was better than the Nazified edition with the author's sister to speak for him. But there is a great deal of self-important nonsense by Mr. Kaufmann in his edition. Here we have a fine translation that may well become the new university standard, at least it is for me.

Rescuing Religion from the Death of the Creator-God
By Peter Capofreddi
“Hold your highest hopes holy,” says Nietzsche in one breath, and “God is dead” in another. For Nietzsche the creator God is forever gone. But the God that represents man’s highest hopes and aspirations remains very much alive.

What Nietzsche’s Zarathustra fears most is that creator-man will die along with his creator-God, leaving nothing but “the last man” who has transformed himself into a mere component of an orderly industrial machine. The last man “makes all things small,” including himself. He no longer aspires to create something great, but only to play his tiny part in the machine. The last man enjoys his entertainment, but he wants to make sure it too remains small and superficial. “He's careful that his entertainment never takes hold of him.”

When duty makes man small, as it does in an industrial society that asks him to become a gear in a vast machine, man must cast a “holy no” in the face of duty. Creating freedom is the first step of all creativity. In the past man put “thou shalt” in his holiest place. “Now he must find frenzy and willfulness in his holiest place.” Creativity demands saying no to the duty that makes man small, and then “a new beginning, a first movement, a holy yes-saying.”

“If you can’t be the holy men of insight, at least be its warriors, the vehicles and harbingers of its holiness.” Nietzsche envisions a new religion where all the piety and reverence we had once directed to the unknown God is directed to a God of insight. He wants us to retain all the evangelical fervor we have lavished on the gospel, but now directed toward a new gospel of creative searching.

What is most praiseworthy is what is most difficult. The next step on the path to greatness is the one that leads uphill. You will invariably seem eccentric. No one will understand your path except the friend willing to walk beside you.

“To value is to create.” The last man no longer creates. So he can no longer value. What his neighbor seems to value, the last man avidly adopts as his own value. But his neighbor doesn’t create either. The carcasses of dead values circulate in place of living ones. And the stench is overwhelming.

“You must want to burn up in your own flame. How will you become new if you haven't first turned to ashes?” Nietzsche, like Jesus, wants his disciples to die to the world and be born again. Baptism of fire prepares us for a new life of courageous creativity.

Great book, very good translation
By Joshua Leeger
I believe Nietzsche saw his "Zarathurstra" as his magnum opus, the artistic-expressive summary of his beliefs.

It is a wonderful book, and anyone who has read his other works will find that "Zarathustra" really does synthesize and summarize those other works.

The challenge with "Zarathustra" and Nietzsche's other works, is the depth and breadth of his experience and scholarship. The more I read his works, the more I realize I miss...and to some degree must miss! I have a limited background in Classical studies, but not to the extent Nietzsche did. As another for-instance - I do not speak or read French or Italian, and so I can only analytically understand Nietzsche's statements about the cadences of those languages, and their connection to their local habitats, and the way they both reflect and influence their speakers' demeanors. Oh well! Something to shoot for, for me, I guess, to learn Spanish and French....and, German?!

This is a very good translation with good end-notes. There are some references I think the translator missed, but that's ok.

Learn about SQL Server 2014 from a SQL developer’s perspective
By Ian Stirk
Hi,

I have written a detailed chapter-by-chapter review of this book on www DOT i-programmer DOT info, the first and last parts of this review are given here. For my review of all chapters, search i-programmer DOT info for STIRK together with the book's title.

Despite a misleading title, this book aims to provide SQL developers with the knowledge to get the most out of SQL Server 2014.

Firstly, from the book’s title I expected an in-depth discussion of the various aspects of the T-SQL programming language from a SQL Server 2014 perspective. Even the blurb on the publisher’s website says: “Pro T–SQL Programmer’s Guide is your guide to making the best use of the powerful, Transact-SQL programming language that is built into Microsoft SQL Server's database engine.”

However, this book is not a discussion about T-SQL specifically; rather it is a guide to SQL Server 2014’s functionality from a developer’s viewpoint. The book’s title seems incorrect.

The book is aimed at SQL Server developers wanting to get up to speed on functionality in SQL Server 2014. It’s not an introductory book, and assumes a working knowledge of T-SQL .

Below is a chapter-by-chapter exploration of the topics covered.

Chapter 1 Foundations of T-SQL

The chapter provides an overview of how SQL has developed, its basic structure, and the importance of coding style. A brief summary of the development of Codd’s relational model is given. The difference between declarative (e.g. SQL) and imperative (e.g. C) languages is highlighted – i.e. WHAT to do as opposed to HOW to do it. The basic constituents of SQL are outlined in discussing schemas, tables, indexes, stored procedures, user-defined functions, 3-value logic, etc. This is followed by a review of the importance of coding style and formatting. This is a good overview of where SQL came from and its major components.

The chapter is well written, with useful explanations, code examples, outputs, inter-chapter links, and diagrams. A helpful summary, together with chapter-related exercises, are provided. These traits apply to each chapter of the book.
.

.
Conclusion

From a developer’s perspective, I found this book an enjoyable read, with lots of useful example code, having wide-ranging coverage of the major SQL Server features. It will certainly get developers from previously versions of SQL Server or from other platforms up-to-speed, but be aware it is not a book for beginners.

If you exclude the chapter on In-Memory Programming, I think perhaps 95% of the book is the same as its previous edition. There’s a lot more that could be said on most topics (e.g. In-Memory Programming), and not all new 2014 specific topics are mentioned (e.g. the new cardinality estimator, resource governor limit by IO, and incremental option for create statistics). Although the book is aimed at SQL Server 2014, it covers features introduced from 2005 onwards, so could be applicable to previous versions.

The summaries and exercises at the end of each chapter are good for revision and understanding. Some links for further information are provided. It would have been useful to include places to go to keep up to date with SQL Server (e.g. websites, newsletters, blogs etc).

As a book about SQL Server 2014 from a SQL developer’s perspective, I would recommend it.

Fantastic Guide to all the new features in SQL Server 2014. I'm using it constantly. There are tech books that prop up your monitor, ones that sit on the shelf, and those that stay on your desk, opened to the section you are struggling with. This one stays on my desk.

In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex, by Nathaniel Philbrick

From the author of the New York Times bestselling, Valiant Ambition, the riveting and critically acclaimed bestseller and a major motion picture starring Chris Hemsworth, directed by Ron Howard

"With its huge, scarred head halfway out of the water and its tail beating the ocean into a white-water wake more than forty feet across, the whale approached the ship at twice its original speed--at least six knots. With a tremendous cracking and splintering of oak, it struck the ship just beneath the anchor secured at the cat-head on the port bow. . ."

In the Heart of the Sea brings to new life the incredible story of the wreck of the whaleship Essex--an event as mythic in its own century as the Titanic disaster in ours, and the inspiration for the climax of Moby-Dick. In a harrowing page-turner, Nathaniel Philbrick restores this epic story to its rightful place in American history.

In 1820, the 240-ton Essex set sail from Nantucket on a routine voyage for whales. Fifteen months later, in the farthest reaches of the South Pacific, it was repeatedly rammed and sunk by an eighty-ton bull sperm whale. Its twenty-man crew, fearing cannibals on the islands to the west, made for the 3,000-mile-distant coast of South America in three tiny boats. During ninety days at sea under horrendous conditions, the survivors clung to life as one by one, they succumbed to hunger, thirst, disease, and fear.

In the Heart of the Sea tells perhaps the greatest sea story ever. Philbrick interweaves his account of this extraordinary ordeal of ordinary men with a wealth of whale lore and with a brilliantly detailed portrait of the lost, unique community of Nantucket whalers. Impeccably researched and beautifully told, the book delivers the ultimate portrait of man against nature, drawing on a remarkable range of archival and modern sources, including a long-lost account by the ship's cabin boy. At once a literary companion and a page-turner that speaks to the same issues of class, race, and man's relationship to nature that permeate the works of Melville, In the Heart of the Sea will endure as a vital work of American history.

Amazon.com Review
The appeal of Dava Sobel's Longitude was, in part, that it illuminated a little-known piece of history through a series of captivating incidents and engaging personalities. Nathaniel Philbrick's In the Heart of the Sea is certainly cast from the same mold, examining the 19th-century Pacific whaling industry through the arc of the sinking of the whaleship Essex by a boisterous sperm whale. The story that inspired Herman Melville's classic Moby-Dick has a lot going for it--derring-do, cannibalism, rescue--and Philbrick proves an amiable and well-informed narrator, providing both context and detail. We learn about the importance and mechanics of blubber production--a vital source of oil--and we get the nuts and bolts of harpooning and life aboard whalers. We are spared neither the nitty-gritty of open boats nor the sucking of human bones dry.

By sticking to the tried and tested Longitude formula, Philbrick has missed a slight trick or two. The epicenter of the whaling industry was Nantucket, a small island off Cape Cod; most of the whales were in the Pacific, necessitating a huge journey around the southernmost tip of South America. We never learn why no one ever tried to create an alternative whaling capital somewhere nearer. Similarly, Philbrick tells us that the story of the Essex was well known to Americans for decades, but he never explores how such legends fade from our consciousness. Philbrick would no doubt reply that such questions were beyond his remit, and you can't exactly accuse him of skimping on his research. By any standard, 50 pages of footnotes impress, though he wears his learning lightly. He doesn't get bogged down in turgid detail, and his narrative rattles along at a nice pace. When the storyline is as good as this, you can't really ask for more. --John Crace, Amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly
In 1821, a whaling ship came upon a small boat off the coast of Chile containing two deranged men surrounded by human bones that they alternately chewed and clutched to their shriveled bodies. The two were survivors of one of the most well-known marine disasters of the 19th century: the sinking of a 240-ton Nantucket whaleship by an 80-ton sperm whale. A maritime historian, Philbrick recounts the hellish wreck of the Essex (which inspired Melville's Moby-Dick) and its sailors' struggle to make their way to South America, 2,000 miles away. Of the 20 men aboard the two boats, only eight would remain alive through the ravages of thirst, hunger and desperation that beset the voyage. With a gracefulness of language that rarely falters, Philbrick spins a ghastly, irresistible tale that draws upon archival material (including a cabin boy's journal discovered in 1960). Philbrick shows how the Quaker establishment of Nantucket ran a hugely profitable whaling industry in the 18th and 19th centuries and provides a detailed account of shipboard life. A champion sailboat racer himself, Philbrick has a particular affinity for his subject. His fastidious, extensive notes and bibliography will please historians, but it's his measured prose that superbly re-creates a cornerstone of the early American frontier ethos. 16 page photo insert not seen by PW. 15-city author tour; foreign rights sold to nine countries. From School Library Journal
YA-In 1819, the Essex, a Nantucket whaleship carrying a crew of 20, began what all thought would be a normal, two-year voyage. Instead, after a year and a half of near-disasters, the ship was rammed by a sperm whale and sank in the Pacific. All hands got off in three whaleboats and were at sea for three unbearable months of short rations and little fresh water, leading to the death by starvation of some and the killing of others to provide food. One boat disappeared and the two remaining eventually became separated. When rescued off the coast of Chile, only five men were still alive, including the captain and first mate, as well as three rescued later from an island. Philbrick brings the era to life, giving readers a rounded picture of the whaling industry and its society. Relying mainly on two survivors' detailed accounts, one of which has just recently been found, he fleshes out the tale in an exciting manner that sweeps readers along. He includes modern medical knowledge of the physical and mental effects of starvation on humans. The book concludes with tales of other shipwrecks, a description of how the survivors lived the rest of their lives, and an introduction to the recent work of the Nantucket Whaling Museum. The contrast between today's touristy island paradise and yesterday's hard life will not be lost on teens.

For those who love history!
By A. Holder
I'm not here to necessarily review the book - as several people have already expressed what a great story this is - but rather I'm here to say thank you to Nathaniel Philbrick and all other non-fiction writers who have taken the time to research amazing real life events and place that information into a gripping, factual account that somehow still reads like a novel. I'm a high school history teacher who loves all kinds of history, but was never really interested in the whaling culture found on Nantucket Island, per se. But after having read an article about the book in my Smithsonian Magazine, I was instantly gripped. I had no idea that Moby Dick was based on a real event. When I was in high school, my dad challenged me to read Moby Dick. I think he actually said he would give me $100 to finish it - and even with the cash reward - I couldn't do it. I was so bored. But, at 17 years old, I had not yet found my favorite genre: historical non-fiction. Now as an adult, and obviously because I teach the subject, I have become a voracious reader of non-fiction books, and having just consumed this one, I can tell you it was well-written and paced beautifully. In between the story of the Essex were lots of little tidbit type facts about the whaling industry in general as well as other very famous and not-so-famous stove ships and evidences of survival induced cannibalism. Very interesting book. I'll be looking for another Philbrick book to read right after I post this review.

Unable to put it down

I knew the outlines of the story of the Essex from reading Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America. What was most interesting to me was the story of how the crew dealt with the event, their tenacity, ability to endure enormous suffering, and willingness to follow leaders, even leaders with very different skill sets. Lots of revealing detail about the community of Nantucket, the construction of the ships, how the crews were assembled of novice and veteran whalers, the sheer enormity of the task of finding, killing, rendering whales and sailing these relatively small, relatively fragile ships thousands of miles into unknown waters. These were courageous, if not desperate, men.

A review from a sailor.

I myself am a merchant seaman, and chose this book out of a list of potentials for my time at sea. I'm extremely glad I did. This book is very true to life, and will give readers with no knowledge of the maritime professions, as well as readers who have spent a life at sea nearly equal depth into every aspect that this book builds its self upon. The book starts by immersing you in the era of whale fishing, and the lifestyle of those living in, and sailing out of Nantucket on a personal level. Then it builds up characters individually, making you feel like you've actually met them. Next it builds up very graphic depictions of sailing, the hunt, and processing a whale. When tragedy strikes, the descriptions manage to get even more in depth. As a reader, although I did not feel that I would have made the same decisions as the various characters, I felt I could sympathize with them, and understand why they chose the way they did.

I'm not an avid reader, but this book was well worth the read. It really allows the imagination to take over to make the reader feel as though they are right there in the same boat, and part of the same crew.
