In STORMS OF MY GRANDCHILDREN, Dr. James Hansen, the nation's leading scientist on climate issues, speaks out for the first time with the full truth about global warming: the planet is hurtling even more rapidly than previously acknowledged to a climatic point of no return. Although Hansen was Al Gore's science advisor for "An Inconvenient Truth," his recent data shows that our situation is even more dire today. But politicians haven't made the connection between the policy and the science. He shows why Gore's solution, cap and trade, won't work, why we must phase out all coal, and why 350 ppm of carbon is a goal we must achieve in the next two decades if our grandchildren are to avoid global meltdown and the storms of the book's title. This urgent manifesto bucks conventional wisdom (including the Kyoto Protocol) and is sure to stir controversy, but Hansen-whose climate predictions have come to pass again and again, beginning in the 1980s when he first warned Congress about global warming-is the single most credible voice on the subject worldwide.
Hansen paints a devastating but all-too-realistic picture of what will happen in the next year, and ten years from now if we follow the course we're on. But he is also an optimist, showing that there is still time to do what we need to do. Urgent, strong action is needed, and this book, released just before the Copenhagen Conference in December 2009, will be key in setting the agenda going forward to create a groundswell, a tipping point, to save humanity-and our grandchildren--from a dire fate more imminent than we had supposed.

Starred Review. Hansen, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, lays all the cards on the table in this thorough, detailed analysis of the history, science and politics of climate change, a Silent Spring-style warning cry that predicts "a rough ride" for our grandchildren. Using numerous charts and graphs alongside accessible explanations, Hansen presents copious climate data for a broad audience. After discussing the recent history of global warming science, from the Climate Task Force of 2000 to his up-to-the-minute carbon dioxide limit of 350ppm, Hansen provides recommendations for achieving greenhouse gas reduction, as well as strategies for reducing or eliminating fossil fuel use: "For the sake of our children and grandchildren, we cannot allow our government to continue to connive with the coal industry in subterfuges that allow dirty-coal use to continue." The most significant step, he says, would be creating a cost structure that escalates cost as carbon emissions increase. With of-the-moment discussion of topics such as climate vs. weather (addressing in particular the cool U.S. summer of 2009), cap-and-trade vs. fee-and-dividend, and climate change politics as well as activism, this is certain to be as controversial as it is informative. Hansen's message is stirring as well as urgent, and should be required reading for anyone involved in public policy.
From Booklist
*Starred Review* Climatologist Hansen, director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and an internationally renowned global-warming expert, became even more famous when he was censored by the Bush administration. After decades of studying the role fossil fuels play in global warming and witnessing the federal government’s failure to take action to lower carbon emissions, he felt compelled to write his first book out of concern about the potentially catastrophic future facing his grandchildren. Hansen condemns governmental “greenwashing” and the undue influence of more than 2,300 energy lobbyists, and attempts to close the gap “between public perception and scientific reality” by lucidly explaining the dynamics of global warming, its acceleration, and how a slight rise in temperature can lead to disastrous consequences. He then boldly declares that the way to solve the climate crisis is to “rapidly phase out coal emissions.” How will we meet our energy needs without coal? Hansen tells the “secret story” of the jettisoned “fast” nuclear reactor, a safer and more efficient reactor than those currently in use, and advocates for its resurrection. Rich in invaluable insights into the geopolitics as well as the geophysics of climate change, Hansen’s guaranteed-to-be-controversial manifesto is the most comprehensible, realistic, and courageous call to prevent climate change yet. It belongs in every library. --Donna Seaman

“Here Hansen takes off the gloves … As the author writes, we're simply out of time. With urgency and authority, Hansen urges readers to speak out--taking to the streets if necessary--to protect the Earth from calamity for the sake of their children and grandchildren.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“When the history of the climate crisis is written, Hansen will be seen as the scientist with the most powerful and consistent voice calling for intelligent action to preserve our planet's environment.” ―Al Gore
“In Storms of My Grandchildren: The Truth About the Coming Climate Catastrophe and Our Last Chance to Save Humanity, James Hansen gives us the opportunity to watch a scientist who is sick of silence and compromise; a scientist at the breaking point -- the point at which he is willing to sacrifice his credibility to make a stand to avert disaster, to offer up the fruits of four-plus decades of inquiry and ingenuity just in case he might change the course of history…An urgent book.” ―Los Angeles Times
“Hands down the best, most informative, brilliantly written book on general climate science I've ever read...” ―DailyKos.com
“Read these two books and you will become both a knowledgeable eyewitness to our unfolding crisis, and even an advocate for change.” ―Dr. Francis Moul, The Lincoln Journal Star
“Dr. James Hansen is Paul Revere to the foreboding tyranny of climate chaos--a modern-day hero who has braved criticism and censure and put his career and fortune at stake to issue the call to arms against the apocalyptic forces of ignorance and greed.” ―Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
“This is "An Inconvenient Truth" on steroids. The book is well written, well presented, captivating, and depressing. The perfect Christmas gift for your favorite climate geek, or even your favorite denialist!” ―Greg Laden's Blog
“Jim Hansen is the planet's great hero. He offered us the warning we needed twenty years ago, and has worked with enormous courage ever since to try and make sure we heeded it. We'll know before long if that effort bears fruit--if it does, literally no one deserves more credit than Dr. Hansen.” ―Bill McKibben, coordinator 350.org and author of The End of Nature
“This is not the best-written science book ever, nor the easiest to understand. But it could be the most important one you'll ever read. It's not too late to avert disaster, Hansen says, but we need to change tack fast.” ―Michael Le Page, New Scientist
“If you want to know the scientific consensus on global warming, read the reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. But if you want to know what the consensus will be ten years from now, read Jim Hansen's work.” ―Dr. Chuck Kutscher, National Renewable Energy Laboratory and American Solar Energy Society (ASES), editor of ASES report "Tackling Climate Change in the U.S."

Time to face reality; the world we are leaving for our Grand Children
By Thomas Wikman
James Hansen got his PhD in Atmospheric Physics and he studied for the famous Space Scientist James Van Allen (Van Allen radiation belts). He is one of the world’s foremost experts on radiative transfer, planetary atmospheres, and climate models. In this book Dr. Hansen gives an overview of the history and science of global warming as well as the politics around it and he discusses the climate skeptic/contrarian propaganda. He explains what we know about global warming and how we know it, and he warns us about the potential dangers of global warming (or climate change) and discusses solutions. There is a lot that we do not know about climate change but there is also a lot that we do know and the public needs to get educated on the issue. The book is intended for laymen but parts of the book might still be too complex for readers unused to scientific reasoning.
That carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas is an undisputed fact that has been known for centuries and using mathematics and basic physics formulas you can get a good idea of how much a certain increase of carbon dioxide will affect average global temperatures if you ignore secondary effects. The basic physics behind human caused global warming is compelling by itself. However, the temperature record that has been collected, weather balloon and satellite data, the Keeling curve, other data, and Paleoclimate research, etc, provides us with overwhelming evidence that global warming is happening and that it certainly is us. The data also gives us some idea of where we are heading. He makes it clear that the so called climate models are not good evidence for anthropomorphic global warming. They are used for projections. They are getting better but they still have a long way to go. In any case, compelling evidence is still something we have plenty of.
One of the topics discussed in the book are past climate and climate cycles, for example, the ice ages. In the case of ice ages perturbations in the earth’s orbit caused climate forcings, which in turn affected the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. This in turn strengthened the effect of the original forcing (positive feedback). Studying various past climate events like this James Hansen was able to conclude that a doubling of CO2 would lead to a warming of the Earth of about 3.0 degrees Celsius (5.4 degrees Fahrenheit), which is bad news. Whatever has happened in the past, human-made climate forcings are now in total dominance over natural forcings, and the climate is now changing extremely fast. It is changing more than ten times as fast as the sudden Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) event 55 million years ago, and PETM led to the extinction of perhaps half of all species on earth.
I tend to be the most interested in the science aspect of things. However, explaining the science was just one part of the book. This book also discusses the political history of climate change, meetings with political leaders, the propaganda, Richard Lindzen and his climate change skepticism and “tobacco is safe” advocacy, environmentalist organizations, and solutions. In that regard James Hansen shows himself as the political independent he really is. He criticizes Republicans for inaction or resistance to action and Democrats for advocating the wrong solutions. He expresses support for Nuclear Power as an alternative to fossil fuels and he criticizes some environmental organizations for making good solutions to anthropomorphic global warming harder to achieve. The solution he expresses support for is a revenue neutral carbon tax.
In summary I really liked this book. It concisely and effectively presented a lot of useful information on many topics and advocated a sensible solution. James Hansen is extremely knowledgeable and a clear headed thinker, he is modest and careful with his statements, and he is very much grounded in reality. After reading this book I want him for President. I highly recommend this book.

An excellent breakdown of what could come or what could pass. I like that James is smart enough to understand that climate change is an issue. Even if it were not real, there is pollution and the world is in conflict. There will most likely be a die off or a dark age. The current circumstances are not favorable and the people responsible for it will never answer for it. So many animals have died for our need of power, privilege, and to have order over our lives, when reality itself is unconquerable. Future generations will have a flawed god of technological isolations, genetic alterations by the imperfect God of humanity, which has killed and destroyed itself for hundreds of years. Humans may be left with themselves and creating the planet again will be an imperfect undertaking, where everything is symmetrical and designed this way or that way. It will never be as good. That is if we don't remove our emotions though genetics.
We have killed millions to bring about a consumerist society that supports corporations and leaders that wait out the need to act out of money or to bring about an end result. So I guess people are here then to watch the world die . Anything we come up with, will not be compare to the mystique and wonder that was seen by Thoreau,Emerson, and Muir. It will be gone out of stupidity and elected leaders that abuse power, serving or believing in whatever creation that they created that is so much more important than the planet. If humans had as much focus on the planet as being politically correct or going to work, I'm sure this issue would have been resolved ages ago. It's a self-mutilation while others watch or don't care because there is texting, watching television, and jobs to go to. Meanwhile, it will happen in their life time. The window is closing. They will want an answer. Come up with a good one if we are still alive and the planet isn't Venus.
Thanks for your effort James

Hansen is amazing: was a focused scientist with glossophobia
By Jack R
This is a historically important book, written by a former NASA climatologist: Global warming is not a fluctuation. It could lead to the "Venus runaway syndrome", warming beyond correctable by the planets cyclical gyroscopes..s Venus had water, now surface temperature is 900° F and all the water has evaporated into space. Climate scientists are understating. Hansen is amazing: was a focused scientist with glossophobia; taught himself to write for us laymen and to speak publicly; in this book even includes a science fiction projection to illustrate his point. i.e., a truly amazing person, deeply committed-- he has been briefing presidential-level people beginning with Jimmy Carter and ever since.
