About the Author
Rob Toulson is Professor of Creative Industries at the University of Westminster. He holds a PhD in the field of digital signal processing (awarded by Anglia Ruskin University in 2004) and a first degree in Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University (1999). Rob has a number of year’s industrial experience in digital signal analysis, control systems design, rapid prototyping, and model based design, as well as commercial experience in sound engineering and music production. His main focus is now in developing collaborative research between the technical and creative industries.

Tim Wilmshurst is the author of Designing Embedded Systems with PIC Microcontrollers. He has been designing embedded systems since the early days of microcontrollers. For many years this was for Cambridge University, where he led a development team building original systems for research applications - for example in measurement of bullet speed, wind tunnel control, simulated earthquakes, or seeking a cure to snoring. Now he is Head of Electronic Systems at the University of Derby, where he aims to share his love of engineering design with his students.

for begginners

This book is meant for a high-school student who wants to build some interesting and cool projects. If you are experienced in C programming and want to start learning about embedded systems and ARM, I don't think this is a good book. It assumes you know absolutely nothing about C. It explains 'in detail' concepts such as a=a+1 is equivalent to a++. For every code example or project it uses the mbed library, which basically does everything for you. There is only one chapter at the end of the book where the author doesn't use the mded library, and flashes an LED by accessing the controller GPIOs. That was to me the only chapter I learned something from. But I was hoping to learn something else than flashing an LED. The projects in the book are really easy to implement and they work great. But from my point of view you learn nothing from them, because everything is done under the hood in the mbed library.
If you want to work on fun projects without caring about the theory and details behind, this is a good book. But if you want to learn ARM or embedded programming, you may want to try with other books such as Valvano's books on ARM Cortex microcontrollers (those books do not use the mbed libraries and are much more advanced).

An excellent overview

The reviews of this book which complained about it being too basic made me hesitant to purchase, but I'm really glad that i picked this one up. This is a broad overview of the MBED platform and its capabilities. While it does not dive terribly deep, it does do a respectable job of covering the platform. I've got many years of experience with many different microcontroller platforms (including AVR, PIC, PSoC, MSP430, STM, ColdFire, and 8051) and still got a lot out of this text. I find the claim that this is high-school level material to be patently false. Don't expect low-level coverage of the ARM platform - there are other resources that dive deep in that regard - but IMHO this is an respectable overview of the platform's capabilities, especially within the context of the MBED framework.

CLEAR EXPLANATIONS AND FUN TO READ

Although I have done some programming in other languages, I had no background in C. This book makes it easy to create embedded systems from the ground up. To work the many examples and exercises in the book, I acquired the mbed - LPC1768 Development Board from Amazon. Also, because I wanted Bluetooth communication, to which the book devotes a few pages, I bought the Roving Networks RN42 module (RN42XVP-I/RM) at Mouser. This book really makes it easy for beginners to get projects running by supplying the needed code at each step. Moreover, you don't need to copy code from the pages, much of it is available for download on the web. Code for later chapters that hadn't been put on the author's website yet was provided to me by one of the authors a day after my email request. The facility to contact the authors with questions was a surprise and is a decided plus. I enjoyed the clear writing style and the fact that the authors teach embedded design and programming starting at basics.

The history of art from the early nineteenth century on- ward is commonly viewed as a succession of conflicts between innovatory and established styles that culminated in the formalism and aesthetic autonomy of high modernism. In Art and Crisis, first published in 1948, Hans Sedlmayr argues that the aesthetic disjunctures of modern art signify more than matters of style and point to much deeper processes of cultural and religious disintegration. As Roger Kimball observes in his informative new introduction, Art in Crisis is as much an exercise in cultural or spiritual analysis as it is a work of art history. Sedlmayr's reads the art of the last two centuries as a fever chart of the modern age in its greatness and its decay. He discusses the advent of Romanticism with its freeing of the imagination as a conscious sundering of art from humanist and religious traditions with the aesthetic treated as a category independent of human need. Looking at the social purposes of architecture, Sedlmayr shows how the landscape garden, the architectural monument, and the industrial exhibition testified to a new relationship not only between man and his handiwork but also between man and the forces that transcend him. In these institutions man deifies his inventive powers with which he hopes to master and supersede nature. Likewise, the art museum denies transcendence through a cultural leveling in which "Heracles and Christ become brothers" as objects of aesthetic contemplation. At the center of Art in Crisis is the insight that, in art as in life, the pursuit of unqualified autonomy is in the end a prescription for disaster, aesthetic as well as existential. Sedlmayr writes as an Augustinian Catholic. For him, the underlying motive for the pursuit of autonomy is pride. The "lost center" of his subtitle is God. A scathing critique of radical autonomy in the arts

Sedlmayr contrasts autonomous art with what he calls "composite" works of art. For example, a cathedral as a composite work of art is necessarily a group effort on behalf of many people. The project can only be carried out successfully when all of the various mediums used (architecture, sculpture, painting etc) remain cohesive through the application of shared formal elements. On the contrary, an autonomous work of art attempts to shed the elements that would unite it with other works and radically reduces to "pure" form or even no form at all. Unfortunately, many people that comment on Sedlmayr falsely claim that he advocates a solution to the problems associated with radical autonomy by making a conservative return to a previous time and era within the arts (like the neo-classical movement etc) This couldn't be further from the case and he actually ridicules several "historical" attempts of this type that were mistakenly made in the past.

Art as a symptom of spiritual crisis

All art is an expression of the orientation towards or away from God. This perspective gives Sedlmayr's account immense explanatory power. Tracing the evolution of the arts from the Baroque to the Modern era, Sedlmayr shows how the movements of today diagnose a profound crisis in Man's relationship with the divine. The Baroque produced composite works of art that expressed an essentially unitary vision of Man as a creature of God. The Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries saw the separation of reason and heart and the development of increasingly isolated and specialized forms, an architecture governed by the cold laws of geometry rather than human needs, styles of 'pure' drawing that incorporated the techniques of draughtsmanship, purist attempts in painting to capture perception without contamination from mental constructs (e.g. Cézanne). The movement is thus inexorably toward a denial of God and an exaltation of human autonomy that ultimately denies the integrity and inviolability of the human person, as borne out by the emergence of movements such as Dadaism and Surrealism in the Twentieth Century. I would recommend reading this in conjunction with Philip Rieff's Sacred Order/Social Order trilogy.

Excellent guide to Real Estate and Urban Economics

This is an excellent introduction to understanding many of the economic forces which drive urban economics and real estate markets. The book is designed for a graduate-level course, but should be understandable by anybody with a rudimentary knowledge of economics and a desire to learn more. Certainly a 'must' for understanding these important topics and it certainly has some good 'ah ha' points where you 'get' something new and important.

How to clarify your thinking about real estate in cities

If I could recast the title of this book to be "The Economics of Real Estate in Urban Markets" I think you would be able to better understand what this book is about. Frankly, when I first read the title I was bewildered and unsure what exactly this book would be about. I think the term "Urban Economics" is an unfortunate one, but one that is actually well known and in use. After all, what is urban is not the economics, which are the same micro and macro principles you learned in college, but the complex environment in which they are applied and the admixture of both that is required to get to the root of the issues involved. But this is a quibble and does not detract from the real value of this useful book.

Real Estate markets in cities (the urban part of the title) are complex environments that involve the land itself, population and density, existing stock of buildings and their nature, regulations and codes, taxation, environmental concerns, the broader economy, industry and business mix, and much more. This book helps the reader develop intuitions and some algebraic tools about how to think about these issues and to combine them to come to better decisions about private and public investment, policy, and planning. What calculus there is, is kept in the footnotes for those interested.

This book is written for any reader that has had basic courses in micro and macro economics (or at least a general course discussing the basics of both areas) and has a decent command of high school algebra. It has lots of graphs to help the reader understand the intuitions involved and is written quite clearly. A general reader who had these prerequisites could work his or her way through the book on their own quite handily. However, the book is clearly aimed at upper level undergraduate or graduate courses in business, public policy, or urban planning.

I do recommend the book for those interested in this specialty. I do wish they had done a bit more careful job in publishing the maps in the chapter on Firm Site Selection. The legends are supposed to be shades of black and gray (always a bad choice in black and white - use hashing instead) and some of them have two or more areas that are indistinguishable by shade. Look on pages 83, 96, and 128 for examples of this problem. Nowadays, color is not that much more expensive to use and given the price of textbooks nowadays one would think that color would always be used. However, this is a tiny point.

Excellent Text for Understanding Urban Economics

This book is an excellent source for understanding urban economic theory and how it relates to real estate market cycles. It is written in an easy to understand format with relevant illustrations. The reader will find its insights valuable for real estate desicion making, and understanding where and how many real estate forecasts are made.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in real estate development, however; only as a "required" economics text. It is not a real estate investment or financing guide to do "deals".

About the Author
John Bellairs is beloved as a master of Gothic young adult novels and fantasies. His series about the adventures of Lewis Barnavelt and his uncle Jonathan, which includes The House with a Clock in Its Walls, is a classic. He also wrote a series of novels featuring the character Johnny Dixon. Among the titles in that series are�The Curse of the Blue Figurine;�The Mummy, the Will, and the Crypt;�and The Spell of the Sorcerer’s Skull. His stand-alone novel�The Face in the Frost�is also regarded as a fantasy classic, and among his earlier works are�St. Fidgeta and Other Parodies�and�The Pedant and the Shuffly.

Bellairs was a prolific writer, publishing more than a dozen novels before his untimely death in 1991.

Sorcerer's spell

Murders, a shapeless supernatural evil, a cheesy title, weird dreams and plenty of delightfully witty banter. "The Spell of the Sorcerer's Spell" has most of the benchmarks of a John Bellairs book, and honestly this is one of his strongest stories -- it introduces an endearing new character and throws Johnny into a terrifying supernatural situation.

Professor Childermass's car breaks down in a small town. While he waits for it to be repaired, he and his young friend Johnny Dixon are shown a dollhouse connected to the professor's grandfather, who died under mysterious circumstances. Johnny finds a tiny skull, which he finds he can't speak to anyone else about -- then he has a vision of a ghostly figure killing the old man. Soon afterwards, Professor Childermass vanishes under mysterious circumstances.

Johnny finally approaches the priest Father Higgins, who promises to help if he can. A petition to Saint Andrew provides sudden answers, in the form of a cryptic rhyme that leads Johnny, Fergie and Father Higgins to a remote island in Maine. But even if they can find the professor, how can they defeat the evil forces that center on the sorcerer's skull?

One of the best things about this book is that it introduces the character of Father Higgins, a gruff but kindly priest who serves as the authority figure in this book. One of the funniest moments in the book is when he produces a guitar and starts singing a folk song, much to Johnny's bewilderment. (Hey, priests have to have hobbies too!)

He serves as a good temporary replacement for the professor, even if he isn't quite as knowledgeable as his friend is. Johnny and Fergie serve their usual roles of the timid, quiet boy and his brash best friend; they complement each other flawlessly, even when they annoy one another.

Bellairs does an exceptional job with the effects of the skull and its spell, the visions of skeleton scarecrows and Victorian mansions, the ghostly presence trying to overcome the Professor, and the creepy caretaker of the clock museum. Best of all, the plot twists will keep readers guessing right up to the last chapter. A few of the plot twists seem a little contrived, but if those can be overlooked, this is the best that a kid can find in fantasy/horror.

"The Spell of the Sorcerer's Skull" is a vintage spookfest for anyone who enjoys shadowy, haunting chills and thrills. A delightful read.

John Bellairs books have a certain style that you come to expect -- it's got to have lots of humor, a cheesy title that sounds like a B-movie, dark visions, weird dreams, and a shapeless supernatural evil that can destroy us all. One outstanding example would be "Spell of the Sorcerer's Skull," a genuinely creepy little horror story tinged with clever humor.

Professor Childermass's car breaks down in a small town. While he waits for it to be repaired, he and his young friend Johnny Dixon are shown a dollhouse connected to the professor's grandfather, who died under mysterious circumstances. Johnny finds a tiny skull, which he finds he can't speak to anyone else about -- then he has a vision of a ghostly figure killing the old man. John Bellairs had a very clever knack for spooking people, scattering creepy elements through "Spell of the Sorcerer's Skull" like a farmer strewing seeds. He has creepy caretakers, Victorian mansions, an enchanted skull and visions of evil skeleton scarecrows -- and while these things just sound a little cheesy, he imbues them with a dark, eerie feeling that seems to cling to even the innocent scenes.

But as usual, he also injects plenty of quirky humor into the story, such as Father Higgins whipping out a guitar and singing a folk song (much to Johnny's bewilderment). It's a good balance to the darker elements of the story. The only problem is that some of the plot twists seem rather contrived, but the story is a fairly decent one despite that flaw.

He also uses this book to introduce the character of Father Higgins, a gruff but kindly priest who serves as the adult authority figure in this book since the professor is, obviously, nowhere to be seen. He's not quite as knowledgeable as the professor, but he serves as a good temporary replacement, and he works well with the complementary buddies Johnny and Fergie.

"Spell of the Sorcerer's Skull" is a genuinely spine-tingling nugget of kiddie horror, and despite no longer being a kid, I still feel a chill at some of the darker moments. Funny, eerie and weird.

About the Author

Steven F. Lawson is Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University. He has served as an adviser to the television documentary series Eyes on the Prize and has participated as an historical consultant on voting rights cases. His publications include Black Ballots: Voting Rights in the South, 1944–1969 (1976), In Pursuit of Power: Southern Blacks and Electoral Politics, 1965–1982 (1985), Civil Rights Crossroads: Nation, Community, and the Black Freedom Struggle (2003), and To Secure These Rights: The Report of President Harry S Truman’s Committee on Civil Rights (2004).

Outstanding Book !!!

Dean is drinking at the bar when a big man grabs a woman who tells him to let her go. Dean tries to intervene and protect the woman by punching the man who lands on the floor. But the woman helps him up and they leave as he continues to threaten her. Concerned, Dean follows in his car to their motel where he sees the brute strike the woman and knock her to the ground. He has seen enough! When the man goes inside, he pulls the woman away from the door and takes her to his car. He announces that she is being kidnapped to get her away from her abuser. And he offers a choice – be his pretend fiancée or be locked in the basement. But he does this in a way that amuses rather than scares her.

Once home, Camille meets the rest of his crazy family. His daughter, Jen, is a very bright and mature 8-year-old. Her uncles are supposed to be watching her but she sent them outside so she could work in peace. The family dynamics are amazing and hilarious. But Camille’s crazy ex is still out there and he wants to get her back to make her pay! Will he track her down? Is she forever going to look over her shoulder for the danger she knows will find her?

What a wonderful book! Despite a serious situation, there is light-hearted fun and lots of love to make things right. I loved it! The story line was fast-paced. There was enough suspense to keep the readers’ attention. The characters had a strength deep inside and were absolutely likable and worthy of happiness. Don’t let this one pass you buy – it is most definitely worth reading again and again!

I’m on Ms. Bloom’s ARC reader list but I ALWAYS buy her books b/c I like to have a Penelope Bloom library AND she adds so many extras in each bought book. Dean has just left the business he helped found and grow b/c he wants to be with his daughter, actually his dead sister’s child. He helps a woman, Camille, in a bar by taking her hostage (WHAT?!) and back to his home, or should I say mansion. Their cover story: she’s his fiancée. This was a more-than-five- star-book. Fast paced, well-written, good guys, bad guys, lots of naughty, real kidnapping. Wow, what more can I say?!

Dean Sharp I was just having a drink and I saw this man hit a women I hit him and he takes her away so I follow to a hotel and he hits her again she goes to the ground and I Take her with me and tell her I kidnapped her and she is going to be my girlfriend for and I have her meet my crazy family lol Camille for two years my boy friend tells me he owns me and I am so terrified of him that I stay with him but one night at the bar this man comes up and stands up for me but I go stay with my boy friend and go to a hotel room but I have a garden angle with me he follows and kidnapped me and has me as his girl friend and keeps me safe but my boyfriend is not far away and keeps giving me trouble big time but my big strong knight in shining armor is here to protect me good loving exciting awesome sexy steamy story of abuse and love and hero's I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
