About the Author
Dr. Joycelyn Pollock is a Distinguished Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Texas State University. Dr. Pollock's many published works include WOMEN'S CRIMES, CRIMINOLOGY AND CORRECTIONS; CRIMINAL LAW; PRISONS AND PRISON LIFE; and MORALITY STORIES. She received a Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Albany and a J.D. from the University of Houston. She received the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Fellows Award in 2015 for contributions to criminal justice research and education.

A textbook I will actually keep

If you're looking at this product, it's probably because it's a required text for a college course and this review does not matter. You are going to buy it regardless. Still, I will offer some insight. This book is similar in many ways to other ethics textbooks and presents basically an introduction to ethics with a criminal justice slant. I used this in a graduate course and actually ENJOYED the textbook, especially the introductions with real-life examples of ethically dilemmas and the various scenarios scattered throughout the book.

Gr. 6-9. These biographies from the Heroes and Villains series take on history's best and worst by using lengthy quotations and frequent sidebars of primary-source material. Before telling the story of King Arthur, Nardo addresses the tricky question of whether Arthur ever existed--and, if so, who exactly he was. The story picks up steam when the familiar cast (Guinevere, Mordred, Merlin, etc.) enters, and Nardo does a nice job of mixing the exciting stories with historical background of first-millennium England. In Hitler, Nardo chronicles the Fuhrer's unlikely rise to power. Quotes from Hitler's speeches and contemporary witnesses help readers learn about his lies to the German people, his hatred of Jews (even though he, himself, may well have been a quarter Jewish), and his absolute lack of human compassion. It's an ugly portrait, as subjective in its disgust as King Arthur is in its praise. The engaging writing coupled with the collection of quotations make these good resources. Superior of its kind

Quite a few books have been written about Hitler and Nazi Germany since World War 2, including many for young people. This is by far the best bio of Hitler written for students that I am aware of (and I have read everything I can get my hands on about the subject). In a relatively small amount of space the author crams a huge amount of detailed information, all of it both appropriate and fascinating. Frequent references to the dictator's physical attributes, voice, bearing, personal fears, strange fetishes, tantrums, etc., all documented by eyewitness accounts, make this slice of history come alive for the reader. I am looking forward to reading other books by this fine historian.

Aimed at the Non-Professional

It may come as a surprise to learn that non-profits account for some 1/7 of the US economy. Non-profits vary from huge operations like the major museums, universities and foundations down to the local theatre group putting on a play once or twice a year.

As a non-profit grows, so do the requirements for financial management. The organization may begin to get a variety of assets, there may be needs to manage investments or trust funds, there may be debts, and of course there is fundraising.

The other side of this is a requirement for financial reporting, not the least of which is the impact of Sarbanes-Oxley which had increased the responsibilites placed upon the management.

This book is aimed at the financial manager who may have gotten the responsibility without formal training, business-only- training and of course too little time and too few support staff to do the job. It is specifically aimed at the small, resourse-constrained organization, as well as for larger operations.

This is a very complete book, not all of which will be needed by most organizations, but which may become more important as the organization grows.

So many of us enter the third sector with a lot of passion for our particular interest, but not much know-how of the specific financial issues facing nonprofits. This book is one stop shopping for the beginner and the seasoned ED or Development Director.
