Great text... great reference

I met Madhav Swaminathan at an echo conference and I really liked his teaching style. I decided to buy this text and I am glad I did. Not only did I ace the boards on my first attempt (thanks to this book), but in my opinion, going thru this text makes you a better teacher as well. It is systematically organized, esp the subject of ‘Diastology’.

Even though I got great fellowship training at Mass General, I must say the guys at Duke are exceptional echo teachers. I get no royalties for putting up this review ;) Hit me up if you have any questions. Good luck!!!

The problem is with kindle version.

Here I am not talking about the material it self, the material is very good and the information is broad I am talking about the kindle version, it is confusing, disorganized, the figures are illustrated under another title, if you go back to the previous page it will have another different arrangement that will make more confusion. I thing amazon should improve the kindle version before readers take bad idea about this amazing well done book. If I the choice back I will chose the paper version.

It's the most comprehensive, reasonably sized intraoperative TEE book I've read. It's easy to follow and reading any chapter for the first time, you feel brilliant at that topic by the end.

The authors are the biggest names in intraoperative TEE and current in the translation for all modalities into clinical practice, decision making, and outcomes more than anyone else in the world.

Finally it also has lots and lots of practice questions for anyone studying for the TEE boards.

Fun fantasy series. Clever plot. Insightful lessons.

At the time of this review, only one other person has reviewed this book. I am not sure why as I consider this 4 book series in the "classic fantasy" category. I found this series by going through this book list:

As many fantasy series go, this is about disparate group of people forced together by circumstance, but all driven to save the world in a time of war. The story is narrated mostly 3rd person, but also from first in sections. We also get to know the enemy that humanity is fighting against, but it seems as you go through the story that the war is really a plot by a shadowy overlord. This series is unique because of Irvine's tempered sexual scenes, evident love of geology, and clever page-turning twists.

If you are eager to meet a diminutive girl whom doom follows and a new species who doesn't fit in their skin and a whole other crew of driven future makers, you will have fun with this series.

About the Author

R. I. (Bob) Tricker, Former Professor of Finance, Hong Kong University. Honorary Professor Hong Kong Baptist University and Hong Kong Open University.

Dr. R. I. (Bob) Tricker was a chartered accountant, an officer in the Royal Navy, and financial controller of an industrial company, before studying at the Harvard Business School and becoming a Research Fellow at Oxford University. He was Professor of Management Information Systems at Warwick University, then Director of the Oxford Centre for Management Studies (now the Said Business School), before being appointed Professor of Finance at the University of Hong Kong. His books include The Independent Director (1978), Corporate Governance (1984) the first book with that title, and The Economist Essential Director (5th edition 2003). He currently holds honorary professorships of two Hong Kong Universities.

A great IP text book

I got the first edition of this book because it was the required text for a course I took in UC Berkeley a number of years ago. I have been practicing IP law for about 10 years and I still use it as a quick reference (I also obtained the 2nd Edition). In my opinion this is a very well done book and an useful tool for someone who wants to have the overall picture of a complex issue.

Primer, No Less

A waste of paper is rather harsh. Yes, this book is not for the paralegal, but I found that it was a great primer for those that may be interested in some of the operation of law -- exactly who I am. I have no real desire to be a paralegal or more, nor do I want to study law in school, but this book is great in that I am presented with basic information in readable form, with no background in law. I give this four stars because it seems to advertise highly technical information, when it really isn't.

A Very Good Text for Paralegal Advanced IP Students

I was assigned this text in my Advanced Intellectual Property class. It was extremely interesting, with a huge amount of information. It is one of the few IP textbooks written for paralegals -- most are written for lawyers -- and I learned a tremendous amount.

However, I recommend that paralegals who are completely new to IP law start with Deborah E. Bouchoux's "Intellectual Property" text for paralegals first, because Stim's book is definitely a more advanced text. Had I not read Bouchoux's introductory text first, I would have had a much harder time with Stim's text.

I have put the Stim text on the recommended books list of the Association of Intellectual Property Paralegals (AOIPP), on the "IP Books" webpage at:

The only reason I gave the book four stars instead of five is because some sections of it need updating, in view of changes in U.S. Patent and Trademark Office forms changes, rules changes, etc.

With regard to the criticism below that the book did not devote enough time to patent law -- the book devotes 95 pages to patent law -- two long chapters, but the bulk of the book was devoted to copyright and trademark law.

There are jobs for trademark paralegals and copyright paralegals, but I would suggest that the author give patent law "equal time" in his next revision of the book.

Despite this one criticism, I found the book very useful.

During the ten years it took to write the first edition of The Wine Bible and the four years it took to write this second edition, I have often asked myself why wine matters. What is it about wine that I hold so deeply? What is this endless attachment?

I have always known what it is not. It’s not about scoring or competitive analysis, though like any wine pro, I’m game for the next blind tasting. And it’s not about the need to retell what I have learned, though I can lie awake for hours thinking about how to capture a wine in words.

Perhaps it is this: I love wine because it is one of the last true things. In a world digitized to distraction, a world where you can’t get out of your pajamas without your cell phone, wine remains utterly primary. Unrushed. The silent music of nature. For eight thousand years, vines clutching the earth have thrust themselves upward toward the sun and given us juicy berries, and ultimately wine. In every sip taken in the present, we drink in the past—the moment in time when those berries were picked; a moment gone but recaptured—and so vivid that our bond with nature is welded deep.

Wine matters because of this ineluctable connection. Wine and food cradle us in our own communal humanity. Anthropologically, they are the pleasures that carried life forward and sustained us through the sometimes dark days of our own evolution.

Drinking wine then—as small as that action can seem—is both grounding and transformative. It reminds us of other things that matter, too: love, friendship, generosity.

The Wine Bible has taken me a long time to write—in some ways I’ve spent the better part of my last twenty years on it. It has taken this long not because it takes a long time to accumulate the facts, but because it takes a long time to feel a place—culturally, historically, aesthetically.

And so, on my mission to understand the wine regions of the world, I’ve danced the tango (awkwardly) with Argentinian men to try to understand malbec; drunk amarone while eating horsemeat (a tradition) in the Veneto; sipped wine from hairy goatskin bags in northern Greece (much as the ancients would have); and been strapped into a contraption that lowers pickers down into perilously steep German vineyards (an experience that momentarily convinces you your life is over).

I’ve shared wine and cigars with bullfighters in Rioja; ridden through the vineyards of Texas on horseback; eaten octopus and drunk assyrtiko with Greek fishermen in Santorini (considered by some to be the lost Atlantis); and picked tiny oyster shells from among the fossilized sea creatures that make up the moonscape soils of Chablis.

I’ve waltzed among wine barrels with winemakers in Vienna; stomped grapes with Portuguese picking crews until my legs were purple, and worked for weeks with a Mexican harvest crew in California, one of the hardest and most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.

These encounters brought wine so vividly into my life that I ultimately moved to Napa Valley on the sheer belief that living near vines would touch my heart in ways imaginable and not.

And so it has.

What is the superlative of amazing?

I bought the first edition of this incredible tome in 2015. As an ardent winelover for the past fifty years, I fully appreciate the dedication and passion that went into writing it. But MacNeil didn't just write it, she submitted the chapters to literally dozens of experts in their specialty for review. That is how it took TEN years to write!
How good was it? Good enough to take a two pound book with me to the Basque Country of Spain!
I own more than a dozen wine books, most of which gather dust on my bookshelf...not that one, it is a constant companion!
Imagine, a book that took TEN years to write, TEN years ago, and is still valuable. Wait, isn't that a bible?
If you read the Amazon reviews of it, you will find only two complaints: when will she write a new edition, and the weight. Oh, one more: why nothing on Temecula wines?
Finally, ten years and 4,000 pages of manuscript later, we got our wish...and more, because of all the changes, THE most valuable is the Kindle edition! Portable, quick and easy to search, and dozens of other new features.
As a wine advocate and aficionado who is a blogger and is working on a book project on wine, or more accurately the passion of the people who make them, this is a huge help to me.
I have been asked what wines I would take if I was going to a deserted island. I cannot narrow the list down, but as for what wine book I would take, this is it!
Oh, and even Temecula gets mentioned, as well as upcoming regions like Slovenia!

Yeah! It is finally here!

I'd been looking forward to this new edition of the Wine Bible and it did not disappoint. Great updates and expansive new information. It sits on my coffee table, convenient for quick reads when time permits. That is the beauty of the book. I work in the retail wine industry and this book is necessary. I also recommend it to my regular customers who want to increase their wine knowledge because of the approachable style of the content. Good job, Karen!

A Must Have for Wine Lovers!!!

So after becoming a chef and working in kitchens, catering, private chef, and now a culinary school educator I thought it would be fun to obtain a sommelier degree. Yes, I love to punish myself! I am training for my level two sommelier degree now and working with a "Master Sommelier", and without this book (and many others) I would not be here. This book is a flood of information laid out in a very readable format.

I have multiple books on wine, and wine making as I began to make wines several years ago. I had a first edition copy of this book but at the time it did not help me much in my wine making operation so I sold it. Dumb, I will never sell or give away any food and beverage books again. I now own both copies again, and cannot put them down. A thousand page book is usually a shelf sitter but not this one.

The first 150 pages are loaded with information on varietals, vinification, terroir, tasting, pairing, and a little on the making of as well. Then you hit the chapter on France, WOW, 200 pages of French wines. I guess once you learn there are around 10,000.....yes 10,000 wines worldwide you soon realize you have ALOT to learn. The section on Italy and their 3,300 different varietals is mind blowing but very interesting and informative.

If you want to learn more on this luscious, and beautiful beverage that has been around since 8,000 BC, this is the book to own. As a hobby, collector, maker, or just enthusiast, this is a book for your library. I would have paid double the price for the wealth of information loaded into this easy sized reader. Overwhelming to the beginner, but worth it. Just buy it, you will not be disappointed!

This unusual compilation makes for much more fascinating reading than would a strict narrative about international child-rearing practices. The editors (Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) present seven societies by way of fictional childcare manuals in the manner of Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care. Some of the imaginary advisers cited are based on real people (e.g., grandmothers) whom new parents might consult. In some cases, the authors present their own field studies while cautioning that these are "in no way intended to advise members of these societies on how to raise their children." The point is not to prescribe from the conceit of Western society but to report how different cultures view child rearing. All child-rearing practices derive from layers of cultural traditions established through generations, and the similarities and differences among these seven diverse societies are striking. What remains constant is the care of children and their place in each society. Recommended for academic and large public libraries.

Maybe the latter would be better for people writing reports on specific countries' child-rearing methods

This book explains what happens in just a few countries rather than mentioning what happens in a lot of countries. I'd rather learn interesting facts about many different countries so I could take a best-of approach rather than study some countries so in-depth. Maybe the latter would be better for people writing reports on specific countries' child-rearing methods.

An Exciting Way to Learn

I love the way this book is setup. It is designed to be read like a parenting handbook would be, but for 7 different parenting cultures. Because of this, it covers topics from delivery, how to prepare for the baby, how to potty train, sleeping arrangements, etc. Easy and fun to read.

Unique and interesting read

I read a lot of books on childcare, and have always been interested in other cultures, so this immediately caught my eye. "A World of Babies" is seven "childcare manuals" from the perspective of seven different societies around the world. It's the brainchild of a group of anthropologists, and you will be hard pressed to find something like this anywhere else.

I found it fascinating how the different societies were so different, and yet many had common threads and beliefs. Some things that the other cultures believed varied from interesting (such as the Balinese always holding an infant's head up because they are considered sacred) to flat out horrifying (such as the Turkish Muslim mothers kissing and stroking their sons' genitals to both encourage toilet training and make him proud of being male). I also found it really interesting how much Puritan beliefs have influenced current American childcare. All in all though, learning about the different cultures was a fun and interesting experience.

Like all compilation books this was a bit inconsistent and not very uniform. On the whole all of the chapters covered pregnancy, childbirth, and early infancy. Some went as far as raising the children into puberty, and others stopped roughly at toddlerhood. While I like the book part of the format did irritate me. The authors all created a fictional "biography" of the "author" of their chapter. I really don't understand what the point or purpose of that was, because they had to go out of their way to explain it was all made up. I think it would have been less confusing and made more sense if they just wrote their "manuals" as anthropologists who studied the cultures, rather than pretending to write as people within that culture. After all, they had to explain things about the cultures within the voice of their character--which came off sounding odd. Like some passages would says "As you know in our culture when a child is born we ----" or "Our sacred --- that everyone knows ----". It just sounded weird and one of the anthropologists shamelessly referred to herself in her chapter.

All in all, this was a good book. It would be a fun book for someone very interested in anthropology, or an expectant parent tired of all the unsolicited advice.

I Wish I Could Have Been At Hughes Aerospace in 1961

Everything you need is in this one very compact volume. Not that it contains all of physics. No. What it does contain and does convey is the sense of adventure and daring one needs to proceed in theoretical physics calculations.

Of course there are Feynman diagrams.

He treats systems at first simply but then progresses at a very leisurely pace to give the total picture. That is First Classically then progressing to The Quantum Mechanical picture which has the hidden traps which contradict human intuition.

I like his metaphor "to nibble at problems". This is a great book.!
Other phrases he uses are also great and you can tell that the words in the book are almost verbatim. Like the Feynman lectures you get the drama here as well.

They should have filmed it....if they didn't....it would be marvelous to watch.!!

Pretty much unreadable

Nothing against Feynman, but this is an OCR version which is dreadful regarding formulas and symbols. Pretty much unreadable. Someone has to re-typeset it and I am sure it would be great.

a tremendous book

when i was undergrad, i read Prof. Kerson Huang's stat mech. i think that book is good. everything is covered systematically, but everything is explained 'evenly'. if u r a careful reader, u still get the ideas of the essence, like partition function plays the central role of stat mech, etc.

now, i am reading feynman's book. it's totally diff from huang's. it's full of excitement. he put the principle of stat mech which is the relation b/w partition function and probability at the very beginning. all the other aspects in stat mech follow so straight forword and there are endless novel derivations in this book. i feel many of my previous understandings are interconnected by reading this book.

it's simply great, just like the other books written by feynman.
