The volume assesses why India and Pakistan continue in non-crisis times to think about power and military force in outmoded ways embedded in pre-nuclear times, and draws lessons applicable to them as well as to other contemporary nuclear powers and states that might be engaged in future cold wars.

The Holman Ultrathin NKJV Reference Bible almost got it perfect. My only gripe is that it is a ...

*** Update 08/21/13*** Ok, I have to add some info here. You can still read my original review below, but as I've been using this Bible I have been able to see some things I originally missed. The first thing is that the paper is much better than I expressed in my original post below. It is pretty smooth in texture and the ink is sharply printed on it offering good contrast and limited ghosting. The second thing is that the cover is much softer leather than perhaps I explained. If it wasn't on card paper and lined inside with vinyl it would be floppy. It is also pretty thick leather. I doubt it will be easily hurt. Last, I'd like to note that Holman as of yet has not responded to my questions about the binding. I can observe that the maps in the back and the presentation pages in the front are sewn into the Bible, but that doesn't mean the Bible itself has a sewn binding. I still can't see any dimples on the inside that would indicate stitching and the binding doesn't bend like a sewn binding. I'm going to wait a bit longer before I damage the Bible to find out if it is in fact sewn. I really hope it is sewn. Even if it isn't, this is a great Bible. I love the size and weight. It is a good all around thinline reference Bible. If it turns out to be a sewn binding, I would compare it to the $35 Lockman Foundation NASB.

Review of the Holman NKJV Ultrathin Reference Bible in Brown Genuine Cowhide.
The Holman Ultrathin NKJV Reference Bible almost got it perfect. My only gripe is that it is a glued binding. The advertisement on Christianbook.com says it is a sewn binding http://www.christianbook.com/nkjv-ultrathin-reference-brown-genuine-cowhide/9781433615030/pd/615030?event=ESRCG and reviews on other sites have also said it is a sewn binding, but I don't believe it is. I took a close look at it and it looks and lays like a glued binding. I would hate to have to cut such a nice Bible up to see if it is truly sewn or not so I think I will first e-mail Holman and ask them. If they say it is sewn, I'll probably have to cut this Bible up to see. They might be paying for it to be sewn in Korea, but who knows if it is getting done. Perhaps there is a mix up over at Christianbook.com?

Having that said let's take a look at what makes it a good buy. First off, I like the New King James Version (NKJV) it is a good translation. It is easy to read and it is accurate. It has been around for quite a while now and I am pretty familiar with it. My favorite is the NASB, but the NKJV comes in fourth for me. NASB, ESV, KJV, and NKJV. I don't think I'd bother with any other translations. Too many agenda driven ones out there now.

The Bible came in a cardboard box, cushioned with paper. The Bible was inside a retail box that would be good to store the Bible in as it is pretty sturdy.
The Bible itself was wrapped inside two sleeves of thick, brown, paper. This was to protect the cowhide cover.
I liked the cover. It was genuine cowhide and pretty thick. It was somewhat tacky in texture making it easy to hold on to. It is lined with what looks like vinyl glued to the inside which is pretty typical of Bible in this price range. The Bible has a suggested retail of $49.99 but sells for approximately $39.99 on Christianbook and about $45.00 on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Large-Ultrathin-Reference-Genuine-Cowhide/dp/1433615037/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408390491&sr=8-1&keywords=9781433615030
The Bible measures about nine inches by six inches by an inch.
The spine of the Bible has raised hubs on the back that appear to just be decorative. Just because there are hubs doesn't mean it is a sewn binding. I do like the look and feel of it.
There is one brown ribbon marker and the page edges are gold colored as well as the spine. I don't know if it is real gold leaf or not. For the price I'm guessing it isn't.
The font is 8 point. It is clearly printed and easy to read. The words of Christ are in red. The Bible is printed in Korea.

The Bible is printed in a double column format with center column references. There are also book introductions.
There is a sixty six page concordance and eight color maps. The paper that the maps are on aren't as glossy as some and might hold up better because of it.
The paper is good quality.

Satisfactory, but not superior

This edition of the NKJV published by Holman will please many users, depending on which features are most important to them. The leather seems to be of superior quality, the pages also seem to be of excellent quality, and the typeface is clear. In retrospect, however, I wish I had ordered a Bible in giant print instead of just large print. The print does not seem especially large. A document typed on my computer in the font Times New Roman at 12 points (considered average size) is larger than the type in this Bible. I also would have liked a Bible with wider margins. This is a red-letter edition (which does not matter greatly to me) and has center column references. There are also many headings scattered throughout the text. I would have been just as happy if they had been omitted.

In my mind, I am comparing this Bible to the Bible I have most enjoyed using--the Inductive Study Bible put out by Precept Ministries. It has almost no headings (so your interpretations are unswayed by the ideas of others), and the margins are wide. The study helps of that edition are also truly helpful. The problem? The Inductive Study Bible is not published in the NKJV, and this time I needed a new Bible in the NKJV. Two other Bibles I have in the NKJV were published by Thomas Nelson and both are falling apart. Hopefully this edition put out by Holman will last much longer.

This is the nicest Bible I've ever owned. Sewed binding, thick yet supple binding, and all the perks that make studying easier. I spend time in it daily and don't like having to put it down.

Spiritual Gifts

This book is a very thorough book about spiritual gifts in laymen's terms. The print is of a satisfactory size and one is able to read it with no difficulty at all. It may be used in Sunday School or a Bible Study group. There are study questions at the end of each chapter which helps to reinforce what has been discussed in the chapter. The book has twelve chapters and contains 138 pages so it is just the right length for one who wants to do a study on the spritual gifts. Chapter titles include "Ministry or Manifestation?", "Equipping Ministry Gifts," "The Fourfold Task of the Shepherd," "Body Ministry Gifts," etc. The book is perfect for one who is new to this topic or one who is well acquainted with it.

An excellent book by a serious Pentecostal scholar.

Underwood has emphasized the two essentials to those who would receive the giftings of the Spirit. In 1984, perhaps more than now, there was a tendency to preference of the manifestations above the ministries. This work puts a proper focus on both, as well as their relationship with one another. Reverend Underwood's extensive work as a leader in world missions has shown that he as good in practice as in theory.

Must have for Graphic Design lovers

This was the first Victionary book I ever purchased and I have never regretted it since. I actually bought this one at a store for full retail price when it came out for $40. So please get it on Amazon while it lasts!! It's so much cheaper!

What I love most about this book is how it gives you these little tabs that you can pull out for convenience. It looks cool too. But I love going to this book for reference and inspiration when I'm designing. Although this is no replacement for a swatch book, there are a lot of great design ideas that WORK that are published and you can get a feel of how the colors impact the particular designs. It's a good way to get a 'feel' for using colors in your own design, especially if you're into using one particular color palette in a project.

Not to mention, it's just an awesome visual explosion of imagery to look through. Even my non Graphic Designer friends think the book is cool just for looking at all the cool designs in different colors.

Awesome Book for Design Inspiration

I saw a friend's copy of this book and bought it the next day. Seriously, it's that cool.

I love that it's organized by color, and it really demonstrates effectively how color impacts the feel of the design/brand. I generally gravitate towards warmer colors, so I was immediately drawn to those sections first, but was surprised at how I was pulled in by the greens and blues as well.

The designs in this book are crazy good, and although I've looked at it more times than I can count it's definitely still in the idea-inspiration rotation on my bookshelf. Plus, the cover is awesome!

John Powell, of the Society of Jesus, had a run-away success with his books Why Am I Afraid to Love? and Why Am I Afraid to Tell You Who I Am? in America in the late sixties. First published in the UK in 1975, they have remained popular ever since.

About the Author

Elayn Martin-Gay has taught mathematics at the University of New Orleans for more than 25 years. Her numerous teaching awards include the local University Alumni Association’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, and Outstanding Developmental Educator at University of New Orleans, presented by the Louisiana Association of Developmental Educators.

Prior to writing textbooks, Elayn Martin-Gay developed an acclaimed series of lecture videos to support developmental mathematics students. These highly successful videos originally served as the foundation materials for her texts. Today, the videos are specific to each book in her series. She has also created Chapter Test Prep Videos to help students during their most “teachable moment”—as they prepare for a test—along with Instructor-to-Instructor videos that provide teaching tips, hints, and suggestions for every developmental mathematics course, including basic mathematics, prealgebra, beginning algebra, and intermediate algebra.

Elayn is the author of 12 published textbooks and numerous multimedia interactive products, all specializing in developmental mathematics courses. i really love the series

There are grrrrrreat ! just what I need and I passed my pre-algebra test..i really love the series. I can always go back and review , everything that I need to know . This will also make a great gift of someone who is having challenges with the math work...I am well please with the series. and I will take my time watching them , so that I will understand each algebraic problem. I give it 5 starts , Elayn Martin Gay explains each math problems very well and slowly where you can understand it. I am very pleased with the dvd-series.

Okay, but....

This textbook is good, however, some sections were confusing. I did not always understand the way a problem was worked out in the textbook. My math instructor did not always teach according to the book and for that I am grateful. The author's CD is good and her instructions were clear and concise, but she walks you through select problems only. Not all problems given in the exercises were included in the instructions, so make sure you ask your professor how he or she teaches that particular section.
